Hey guys, I've put about 11k miles on my CRD since I did the rockers/lifters/timing belt/water pump/Weeks/Yeti Mild tune. I usually run around with the windows up and A/C but today I had the windows down and A/C off. In doing so, I noticed what sounded like a mechanical ticking sound when the motor was cold. If I revved the motor, the ticking got faster. Once the motor is warmed up the sound goes away.

I recently replaced the alternator decoupler pulley, but this sound doesn't seem like it repeats quickly enough to be the decoupler. I have attempted to record it in that video I linked above, but I don't know how easy it will be to pick out. Listening to it through headphones it almost sounds like a percussive slap which speeds up around 0:45 when I rev the motor.

Summary:
Tick tick tick tick when motor is cold
All engine numbers look normal, isn't running hot, MPGs are good, etc.

My guess would be exhaust leak.

Mine sounds the same.
Im pretty sure mine is the exhaust flex joint.

I too have had the same noise forever. If I drive really long distances, noise is almost gone. Noise is louder from the passenger side. I agree with flash. Exhaust leak, but I was thinking more exhaust manifold. I have never had my turbo off. Noise is closer then flex joint, to the engine. I have heard this manifold does crack, just don't know where. Hasn't bothered me too much over the years. Just left it until I replace my turbo. Let us know how you make out.

I have this exact same sound from my CRD Cherokee.. i was worried it may be low oil, as my old Rodeo made a similar sound when i was getting close to the 2000km top-up interval.. (reason #4829 why i replaced it lol)... but checked oil, level seems fine... glad to know it doesn't seem to be too serious from what you guys are saying... got it booked in for yearly inspection on thursday, so i'll get them to have a look at i'll let you guys know what i find out

I have the same noise pre and post rocker arm replacement. This is how this engine sounds, no worries. Especially that you had rocker arms and lifters replaced.

If you add more oil, to go to the max on dipstick, noise almost goes away. I wouldn't recommend that though as all that oil will end up in your intercooler and cac hoses. Just play safe, have a good quality synthetic oil made for this engine, regular changes, proper engine warmup and keep a constant 1/2 mark on the dipstick.

I have also heard that metallic sounding tick. It's not nearly as bad as the rockers on the 22R's and 22RE's that are renowned for running forever. If that makes us feel any better about it...

Sounds like a good running CRD to me!

You have an alternator decoupler, standard diesel noises, CCV noise all in that video and that's all you should have.

Would've been better if you'd revved it just a bit and got some turbo spool noise in there too!

Sounds good sir.
