Hi all. After doing a lot of research and saving, I am finally going through with lifting my KK. You guys have had some really good advice in regards to lifts, regearing, and other mods. I have already ordered the lift (4" JBA), front locker (Eaton), and gears (4.56 Yukon). I was wondering if you all had any 'I would suggest doing (insert item)' while the KK is open underneath.

I have read about having to pound pinch welds and some cutting in the front wheel wells because of rubbing issues with larger tires. The tire I am going with is 255/75R17 Duratracs on a wheel with an offset of ~6mm (~4.25" backspace?) on a width of 7.5". Hopefully I'll minimize, if not avoid, pounding and cutting.

The last thing I can think of is replacing/upgrading the pads and rotors. My KK has about ~32k on the rear pads and rotors and ~2k on the front. To do this now or wait until they need to be replaced? I'm leaning towards the former. Thanks for all the advice you all have written throughout this site. It has been really beneficial.

Be careful locking the front. I say this because I just broke an axle wheeling her being open. I'm putting in a Detroit TrueTrac instead of an OX locker like I planned because with an aluminum housing, it's just not enough axle to survive with the way I wheel her haha.

I haven't heard of anyone running a 16x7.5 wheel yet, but with 8"ers needing 5" backspacing and 7"ers needing 4" backspacing you're in a pretty good sweet spot to run that. I can almost guarantee you're going to have to pound the pinch weld-just a thing we all have to do haha.

I upgraded my pads/rotors a few days before my regear and 265/75s (was about 70,000mi on stock brakes) so that I could guarantee a quick safe stop. But with that low amount of miles on them, might as well keep them unless you feel you cannot safely stop.

Are the extended brake lines in the kit?
That should be done as well with the 4 inch lift.

You may want to reconsider your tire size if you plan to go off-road, smaller rims leave more sidewall for airing down.

I was thinking of going with the TruTrac, but realised I would rather have a selectable. If I read correctly, the KK D30 is not aluminum. As for the pinch welds, we'll see once the new tires are on. Or else I'm going to pound town haha.

Yes they are.

I'll cross that river when I get to it. If anything, I'll pick up a dedicated 16" off-road set when funds catch up.

The front diff is definitely aluminum, you'll be fine with either a Trutrac or e-locker. The e-locker being a better choice to prevent the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object (spinning tires landing on the ground)

I like it. My fiancé doesn't. When I worked with the navy I got to see and do a lot my friends back home would never be able to do. Hell, I came pretty close to being as far away from home as physically possible. Somewhere of the western coast of Australia. You still have your sea service letters? Take a look at the forums over on G-Captain. There is a sub for former navy looking to transition over to the merchant side. They are very informative.

I didn't get as far as all of the info they wanted. They sent me to the Coast Guard to have my qualifications certified or something like that. There was a lot if red tape that seemed fabricated so I just blew it off. I had about 8 years of sea service with a bunch of letters of commendation from my division officer up to the commander of PACFLT.
I'm probably too old and broken for a life at sea now anyway.
Is the pay still crazy good?

The it's not necessarily the puddle pirates red taping things. It is usually the civ's they got working for them. I have to jump through hoops to renew my credentials. Even if I follow their instructions to the letter, I still get bounced back for some stupid beurocratic item. But I deal with it. As for the pay, it seems crazy good. For me, the ships I'm on are constantly moving so I have no time to spend it. And living in NYC doesn't help either.

Living in NY period doesn't help lol.

Also, you might want to rethink/research your gears. Unless you tow a lot or go up into the mountains a lot, 4.10s might be better for you. There was an old member here that ran 265/75-16 Duratracs on Alloys that went with 4.56s. He always mentioned that he wished he had 4.10s just because he was overgeared for Long Island.

I have 4.10's with 31" tires. I wouldn't even consider putting 32" tires on. Everything is operating properly and IMO, the way it should've been designed. I also have about 2000 rpm at around 65 mph. I probably need a tuner to complete the package.

And now I'm conflicted. Is there any advantage of a 32 tire vs 31? I haven't bought the tire yet and I can still change out the 4.56 for 4.10. I'm planning on the 32's for that extra little bit of ground clearance.

1/2" more clearance, I don't see where it's worth it. JK's are rockin 35's and 40's. There's no way to follow after they dig ruts, another 1/2" isn't going to help that.

I've ran 265-75-16s and 4.10s for the last 83,000 miles
4.10s are marginal with the 32s in my book
I have lived in Northwestern Ohio which is pretty flat and it did ok but would still like 4.56s way better
In hills it needs 4.56s for sure
As far as tire size for some I think its just the fact they want to say that they have 32s not that they need them.
The extra 1/2 inch more, well how many times does it really come into play
On mine I'm thinking of dropping down a size actually on the next set just so I don't have to swap gears
