I'd like to thank everyone in advance for any help provided. This is my first post so I'll add that I've read Sam's Noob Guide. I just purchased an 06 Liberty CRD with 134k. I'm preparing to do a giant maintenance that encompasses everything that should have been done but that I can't verify has been done. I was getting a CEL and part of it turned out to be glow plugs so I figured I'd tack that on to my (massive) IDparts order. I wanted to pull a plug to see the voltage I needed for the replacement. So I followed this guide *http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=70159* to get out the easiest plug for a sample (plug 1). The plug came out easy as could be without any real resistance. I didn't feel like I was rough in any way. Anyway when I pulled the plug I noticed two things. It was missing just about all of the probe end and that it was the Bosch 7v plug (ceramic). I instantly felt a chill. But then I noticed that the "broken" end of the plug was covered in soot. If I had just broken the plug in the process of removing it wouldn't there be a fresh break with no soot? Or is the ceramic a sooty black color that matches the sides? Could it somehow have broken previously and run out of the engine without causing damage (or so little that it seemingly runs fine now)?

Could the PO have broken it and disassembled the head to remove the bits but just put the broken plug back in?

For now I'm in a limbo afraid to start my CRD. Should I pull the head off to inspect when I'm doing the timing belt service?

Holy crap. There is nothing left of it. I would rotate the engine by hand and see if anything hits and go from there. I would imagine a piece that big would of caused problems trying to get out, but weirder things have happened with these and previous owner might have gotten lucky

Yes, that is a broken GP. (The easy way to check these is to check the resistance at the GP connector with a VOM; high resistance= bad GP)

Given the soot, you did not break it when you pulled it.

My suggestion would be to go the extra distance, remove the intake manifold and check the rockers and valves when you do the timing belt.
(You ARE planning to do the timing belt, are you not?) I would also suggest a set of ARP studs as a preventative measure.

Im willing to bet that the ceramic part of that broken glow plug is still stuck in the head.
I find it hard to believe that much GP material could pass through the engine without causing severe damage.

He may be lucky and that thing start breaking a while ago, bit by bit and eliminated through the exhaust. But I'd also take out the intake manifold to look things up and install arp studs, if you plan on keeping the jeep, or at the very least listen for noises and do a compression test to see the health of the valves for that cylinder.

you have to pull cylinder head and get broken gp tip out , clean and inspect cil head ,and top of piston.

To the op, that's even better, if you can do it... You will know 100% what's the damage, if any.

Based on the appearance of that plug, I also think this is a very old injury and whatever the result, the tip is probably nowhere near the cylinder anymore. You can verify this by rotating the engine with the injectors unplugged (using the starter should be just fine) and if somehow the tip is still stuck in that cylinder bore, the compression should push it right out into your hand. If you only feel wind, then it isn't in there anymore.

For the ultimate in security though, you will have to fully pull the head to be able to clean and inspect the cylinders. No way around it.

Over 225 CRDs currently driving with my valves, timing belt, rockers, or ARP Studs.
Bad noises = REALLY bad things.

Sounds like my nightmares are true lol. We have fiberscopes at my work that should fit down the injector hole so I may just take a look and if I don't see loose bits turn it over a few times with the injector pulled and hope for the best (I still have 3 more plugs to pull out ). It's been seemingly running fine (besides right engine mount being shot) since I got it. Doesn't sound like its got compression issues to me but I can eventually get a tester. Only has what I consider a small amount of smoke considering the lack of love its had. So as long as I'm not going to be in danger of causing more damage (loose bits), I'll probably try to live with whatever damage is currently there for the time being (since its been running on it for long enough to char that plug.

Also I'm out of Valdosta, GA. I haven't seen any other CRD's but I wouldn't mind meeting other owners in the area.

Thank you guys for the massive outpouring of help, I never expected to have so many replies so quickly. I bought the thing for how unique it was and was terrified it'd be a nightmare to fix. But I'm not so worried about resolving issues now. Also I'll try to get some pictures of the screen if I borrow the videoscope, for those with a morbid curiosity about what the plugs did lol.

I am in Tallahassee Florida but out of the US till mid Sept so pretty near you and have full tool set. Per geordi that is an old break and pieces are likely long gone if it has been running but a good scope look thru injector hole can spot any pieces. It did on mine. If you pull injector(s) remember to use newcrush washer and O ring on reinstall

If you have fiber optics available I'd inspect with those first before pulling the head. That is a LOT of work. Suction in a thin walled tube (long straw) can get some small particles out if there are any left, and if you are careful you can pull bigger ones out through the injection hole on top. A leak down compression test might be instructive, too; that will tell you if you have significant valve damage or wear.

Do you even need glow plugs there? There's no where for that tip to go in one piece. I guess there's a possibility that the previous owner had a GP MIL and rather than replacing it simply snapped the tip off and used what was left as a plug.

Great...thanks guys. I did my TB , WP, ARP Studs, etc, pulled EGR and installed Weeks. Thought I was done for 10 years.. but noooo....now it looks like I should pro-actively replace my OE ceramic GPs with the 7v metal ones lest all my other work be for not!!!!! AArrgghh....
