Anyway replacement is easy. See
viewtopic.php?f=98&t=74594 images 1 and 3 for location. In image 3 it's just barely visible to the right of the bend in the intake to EGR valve pipe. Ideally 2 people - 1 up top to feed the new wire and one down below to detach/attach old/new wire - but it can be done by one. I don't recall the details but nothing special was involved when we did my son's some years back. With the cord removed you should be able to easily check old cord and old heater element continuity.
So papaindigo, what is your definition of "easy?"

I've been trying for half an hour to plug a cord back into that engine block heater, but even with my long, skinny arms I can't get to the heater plug. My cord was shot (hoping the block heater is still ok), so I stole my wife's cord and am trying to get it plugged back into my block heater, but I can't find a way to get my hand anywhere near it. It seems like you need to remove the alternator and/or EGR to get at the plug. Any recommendations?
I am crawling under from right behind the driver's side front wheel, and I can see the block heater easy enough, there are just too many non-flexible things in the way to get the cord plugged back in.
