Hi,

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD Cross Rail Diesel and I'm looking for an engine heater block for it. Does anyone know where I should look to buy this part? I looked around myself first but couldn't find anything that said it was compatible.

Thank you!
Cristina

That's "common rail". You should already have a block heater but it may not be obvious. The vehicle comes from the factory with the cord for the heater wadded up and zip did a bit down on the oil dipstick tube. Look there for the wad or a flat 3 wire cord coming from there with a standard 3 prong 120v plug on the end.

I do have the part but it's no longer working and needs to be replaced. I had trouble with it last winter so I'm trying to find the part to replace it before it gets really cold again.

Is it the actual heater unit that is bad, or is your cord bad?

Cord:
http://www.amazon.com/Kats-28400-Gauge-Replacement-Cord/dp/B000I8TQGS

Here is the actual heater unit:

I have not purchased either of these, so I cannot verify.

As old as your vehicle is, just replace the assembly for good measure. The elements will corrode away after time, even with no use.

Usually the wires that connect nearest the plug.

Just replace the plug..... the wires separate from the plug as it hangs out the grill. it's a common problem.

Don't let the plug hang out.

The cord is just a cord and was like $20-25 when I got one at my friendly local DCJ parts counter some years back. The heater element is similar to a hot water heater element. Both can be tested with a volt/ohm meter for continuity. No continuity = that's the bad item.

Just a reminder of the obvious that if you replace the element you are opening up the coolant system so best figure on a coolant system drain and refill with 50/50 Mopar, Xerex G-05, or Motor Craft Premium Gold HOAT coolant and not some green or universal coolant. Buy the straight stuff which is cheaper than pre-mix and mix using demineralized water from the local grocery.

It probably is just the cord. It's always hanging out of the grill. I bought my jeep from my parents and I know my mother used to drive away with it still plugged in (whoops!). As of now I plan to have my mechanic change the cord for me...unless this is an easy job I should be doing myself? or I'll have a friend help me do it and I'll test the block heater that's in there before installing the new one I just ordered. Hopefully the block heater is working fine and then I'll be able to return that part.

I keep mine attached to the radiator cross member just inside the hood with a bit of Velcro. Anyway replacement is easy. See viewtopic.php?f=98&t=74594 images 1 and 3 for location. In image 3 it's just barely visible to the right of the bend in the intake to EGR valve pipe. Ideally 2 people - 1 up top to feed the new wire and one down below to detach/attach old/new wire - but it can be done by one. I don't recall the details but nothing special was involved when we did my son's some years back. With the cord removed you should be able to easily check old cord and old heater element continuity.

Before you go in the trouble to replace the heater element, consider some tips: measure the resistance, it's about 35-ish ohms. Replace just the cable and measure resistance again. Consider an oil pan heater pad that you stick on the oil pan, it takes way less time and no coolant loss to add it, and the results are comparable.

So papaindigo, what is your definition of "easy?" I've been trying for half an hour to plug a cord back into that engine block heater, but even with my long, skinny arms I can't get to the heater plug. My cord was shot (hoping the block heater is still ok), so I stole my wife's cord and am trying to get it plugged back into my block heater, but I can't find a way to get my hand anywhere near it. It seems like you need to remove the alternator and/or EGR to get at the plug. Any recommendations?

I am crawling under from right behind the driver's side front wheel, and I can see the block heater easy enough, there are just too many non-flexible things in the way to get the cord plugged back in.

It's been quite some time since we did this on my son's 06 but I don't recall much difficulty. Me underneath, likely from the front, and him up top the remove the old cord and feed in the new one. I do have a vague memory of one, perhaps hold down, bolt near the plug having to be removed and reattached.

Your write up implies you removed your wife's cord presumably off a CRD. If so replacement is the reverse of removal.

Yanking the end of a cord (out) is a lot easier than threading one through a gauntlet and then getting it into a recessed port you can't reach with your hand.

It was warmer today (easier to work, and the Jeep actually starts), so I got it up on the ramps. LOTS easier to get at when you've got room to maneuver underneath... though still a pain to get to. Thanks!
