So, after renting a pressure kit, the diagnosis was trivial. At about 10 PSI, I found the gasket under the thermostat cover (aftermarket unit) was seeping all around. I torqued those down and it stopped. Then I pumped it up to about 15 and started getting blow-through past the return hose clamp right on the top (thermostat end). Again, trivial fix. After it held 15 PSI for about 10 minutes, I backed it out of the garage, sprayed down all that nastiness with simple-green and a lot of water, and drove around for a while. I'll let it cool and test again tomorrow, but I think I fixed it. Now for my wife's Audi...at least her coolant is a different color :)

I love smart fixes, hope that was the fix!

So, that got MOST of it, but not all. I think I just made the other leak angry. After getting the first two spots sealed, it started leaking like a sieve. I spotted a pool back behind the thermostat so I immediately suspected the seal between it and the head. After 20 minutes of dis-assembly of everything on top of it, I confirmed that the thermostat bolts weren't quite torqued down all the way. I did so, and buttoned up the cooling system and put the pressure test back on. It dropped from 15 to 14 PSI over the course of 18 hours. That's close enough for me (and likely due to other factors like a bad seal at the tool, etc.). That was last week and I haven't seen another drop of coolant since.

The odd part was the bolts being loose. I don't recall if I used loctite or not originally, and I suppose they are in a rather high-vibration location, but I'd never had previous ones back off at all. I suspect it was more a matter of the RTV compressing over time, made worse by the recent changes in temperature.
