I was wondering if anyone has thought about taking an 8 speed tranny out of a wrecked dodge 1500 diesel and putting it into a Liberty CRD. It would be nice to have the extra gears and would probably get better mileage as well. I wonder if the bell housing fit up is the same? It would be nice to be able to get a 8 speed computer and 8 speed tranny and mate them up hopefully without too much difficulty. Any Thoughts?

I don't know about the 8 speed, but I do know you can put one in from up to a 2011 dodge 1500. After that you'd be the Ginny pig.

I've been wondering the same thing. The one thing that may be an issue is that I dont believe the newer transmissions have a standalone TCM but dont quote me on that. You may need to find a 3rd party controller to make it work.

The other thing is that if you were looking to gain taller gearing, I dont think it buys you much. The 8th gear has the same ratio as 5th in our transmission, .67, so you would have to lower the gear ratios in the diffs and take advantage of the lower first couple of gears to get you going. If you dont lower the diff gears your first gear would be pretty low, 4.71 vs 3.0 in our 5 speeds.

I think you'll have some issues with the computers, not sure what the bellhousing looks like in bolt pattern vs our crds, but I can tell you zf8hp doesn't seem bigger than the 454rfe. It also needs a relatively expensive fluid. Oil pan and filter is one piece, and a replacement is more than 300 bucks. I'm more inclined to research one from either an older 1500 or the Colorado, which would be a direct fit, less probably tcm from Colorado. Btw, a new zf should be about $3500. I can imagine some good mileage though. Financially it definitely doesn't worth, if you have the passion and will to do it, then nothing is too expensive or impossible.

Thanks for the replies. I am mainly after the extra gears not for a taller top gear, but to close up the gaps in between gears. It tends to bog a little on some of the shifts.

I think the 66rfe would be a better fit for the CRD.
Its a true 6 speed, unlike the 545rfe and 65rfe.

But the problem with fitting any transmission that is not a 545rfe is finding a TCM that will work with the CRD.
I'm pretty sure that none exist.

BTW, the 65rfe is just like the 545rfe and can be shifted like a 6 speed. Again, the problem is programming the TCM to allow it to shift through all 6 speeds.

66rfe with 3.55 gears would be nice.

I believe zf 8hp70 in the ram has it's own tcm. I need to confirm though, I only know where ecm is since I had to swap it for the gde tuned one. Also, the transmission is 2nd Gen so it has a bit different ratios the first gen (pre 2014), 2nd row:

1........2.........3........4.........5........6........7.........8.........R
4.714 3.143 2.106 1.667 1.285 1.000 0.839 0.667 3.300
5.000 3.200 2.143 1.720 1.314 1.000 0.822 0.640 3.456

545rfe:
1.........2..........2p......3..........4.........5..........R
3.00:1 1.67:1 1.50:1 1.00:1 0.75:1 0.67:1 3.00:1

Would be cool if gde can tear into the tcm, if they do, I'm sure we could swap it quite easy, somebody will make an adapter plate for it if necessary.

Dodge never made 8 speeds and never made a 1500 diesel. Only after Ram Trucks splitbfrom dodge, did they make them.
Now, taking a ZF and putting it in a Liberty, would anything match up? Then, the electronics.

By the way, supposedly, the TCM is inside the transmission.
