Engine was idling yesterday, and I hopped out to activate a barrier into a car park. I heard a continuous squeaking noise from the front left of the engine (drivers side to you, passenger side to me in England). I haven't had the time yet to open the bonnet to have a look, but does this indicate that alternator pulley replacement is on the cards?

Could be alternator pulley or the belt tenshioner or idler pulleys! Usually is red dust on alternator pulley if it is on its way out!

Try pull out the air-con and viscous heater relays first.
