I had an interesting "event" happen over the weekend. I went to the store to pick up a few things. I go out, start the CRD, drive 20ish feet, engine starts missing. It was a very consistent miss that went through the entire RPM range. It felt like one cylinder was dead. I stop, do a visual check. All seems to be in order. No CEL. No smoke. Temperature is in check. I was 3 miles from the house, so I drove it home. It drove fine, minus the dead cylinder. It never threw a CEL. I thought I would at least get a misfire code.??

This was at night, so I planned on diagnosing the next morning. I go out the next morning...I planned on unplugging/reconnecting the injectors one at a time to find the dead cylinder. I start it up, it runs fine!?? I thought maybe it was a head gasket and it was sealing when cold. I checked the coolant reservoir...calm as can be, no bubbles. It's ran fine ever since. I did check the oil also. All was good. No coolant in the oil.

Anyone ever have this happen? Thoughts? Air in fuel? Bad fuel? I'm getting close to a fuel filter change. I thought about going ahead and changing it.

Billy

Probably air or clogged filter. You can probably just get away with the filter change. It can 'buck' off and on when the filter is getting clogged, but you need to change it asap, a clogged filter won't give you much time before you're stuck on the side of the road.

This is the most likely cause.

Thanks guys. My question is, how could the miss be so consistent with it being a fuel issue? With a lack of fuel, shouldn't the engine struggle at higher RPMs, since ? Plus, it's running perfect now. I wouldn't think a clogged filter would fix itself.?? The engine had no problem revving and pulling. Granted, these Jeeps running on 3 cylinders still provides sufficient power to move the Libby.

I was leaning towards air, but I still find it hard to believe the miss would have been so consistent.??

Can air or a clogged filter really present symptoms like this?

Don't get me wrong, I would love the answer to be this simple. I just don't want to be on the other side of the state and have this happen again. I was VERY happy to find out is wasn't a mechanical issue.

Mine did the same thing the other day when my Facet inline pump failed. I turned it off, restarted it, and it ran fine all the way home. I picked up a Mr Gasket lift pump, and that bled the whole system in a matter of seconds, I am going to put one on my other CRD because it works so well.

Edit, just got one on Ebay for $35.00! :-)r

My Facet 40109 failed after 7 years under the hood. I replaced it with another because I figured that was pretty good for $45.

Yeah, I run the $45 inline ones also. They are passive so it should still run even if it fails :pepper: I still have the original fuel head with no problems at almost 200k.

2.5 years old, I could not hear the pulse with the key on and engine not started, I could feel a slight pulse when I touched it, but not enough to lift fuel.

The Mr Gasket 12D does not pulse, it sounds more like a motor pump and moves fuel very fast. As for fail safe, fuel can flow through the Mr Gasket if it breaks.

Great! Thanks for the confirmation. I'll change my filter and see what happens. I do have the newer filter head. If I end up with the "common" air in fuel issues, I'll be getting a lift pump. It's still running fine...as of now. Thanks again.
