I've got a 2007 Liberty with about 143000 on it. A few weeks ago, a vibration started. Replaced both rear u-joints (one was bad), but the problem still persisted. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that the cv joints on front prop shaft were shot. (Told me this was a common problem he had seen). Anyway, I ordered the new drive shaft and replaced the old one. The vibration was still there, but then I found out we had gotten a needle sideways in putting in the u-joints. So, I replaced the defective u-joint. The vibration then stopped, but then I smelled something burning...ended up being grease. There was a pretty big hole in the boot of the front cv joint on the prop shaft. I took that driveshaft back to the parts store and got a new one. I replaced it, and the vibration WAS STILL THERE!! Then, I took it back to the mechanic. They looked at everything, and it looked okay, but took it on a test drive. During the drive, they heard a pop sound, and then the vibration stopped. He pulled it back into the shop and noticed that there was yet another hole in the CV boot, with grease slinging everywhere...same problem as before!

There's the background, so here is my question: Am I not doing something right? Although the 2007 only calls for one length of prop shaft, I measured the original and it is the same length as the new aftermarkets. I can see having one defective part, but two in a row? I've since got a new prop shaft (same brand and store because it was under warranty/defective part), and will be replacing it this weekend. Hopefully it will solve the problem. Has anyone ever run into the issue? I know that some aftermarket parts are not near as good as the originals, but I've never had so many issues with parts. I do notice one thing on the new shafts that I have bought: to fit correctly, I need to "pull" the CV boot out to make it fit into the flange. It seems a little different than the original. The original (although defective) has a little "spring" or "bounce back" in the joint...the new replacement does not. You pull it out to line it up to the flange and it stays in that position. Everything seems to bolt up just fine. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

First I wish you would of came here sooner since the front driveshaft is rebuildable and for like 50-60 bucks from www.driveshaftparts.com Part number ME807

Do you still have the original one if so I would rebuild it and take the replacement back

BUT NOW back to your problem you are having
never heard of any issues like that and have been on several KJ forums for past 11 plus years.

Thanks for the info! I usually buy parts through rock auto but they were much more expensive. I did put the 3rd new shaft in yesterday and the problem persists. I don't think the boot has split yet, but the vibration is back. I am going to take your advice and get the parts to rebuild the driveshaft. My question though, is all I need to get us the me807, or the me807b as well? It looks to me like the me807 will only do the front. Does the me807b take care of the rear of the shaft? I appreciate the help.

Great! I believe it shows the me709 for the diff side. I'll get that one as well and replace both. I'll let you know how it all goes. Thanks!

tommudd,

I apologize for not getting back with you sooner, but the prop shaft is fixed! Jeep working like a charm now. Thanks for the info again....installation of new parts were pretty painless, and fixed the problem.
