My experience has certainly been a love hate relationship. More hate than love, but i feel the tides are slowly slipping in my favor. After buying the jeep in August of 2014, i noticed it acting odd sometimes. Something was surely not right, and after some basic troubleshooting I assumed the head-gasket had gone, it went to a shop up in mass and for 7 months it lived there. Cracked liners, cracked head, 4 new pistons, 1 new turbo, etc. When it runs, its a dream. Just don't let it break lol

I eventually decided that for my needs, I would have to have something custom built / modified. So far, the custom road has been filled with lots of obstacles, and required plenty of cash and patience. When it is over, it is likely I will still have spent less than what I would have if I had bought a JK Rubicon with a lift and off-road goodies. I will have the diesel goodness and real Jeep capability, but without the myriad of issues and lack of reliability my CRD had.

Do you have a thread on your custom build?

I sold it a few years ago. I check here about once a quarter hoping to catch the old LOST AZ guys I used to wheel with. Alas, they have moved on. This is really the only part of the site that gets lots of traffic.

I breakfast bunch will watch my Dane and I pull into the parking lot. On entering one will say, you re driving the white one, guess the gold one is broke. Yeah, it won t up shift, ya da ya da.
One says, buy a new gasser and get a life. Another says he s addicted., hardheaded and refuses to say "I surrender". Another says, he cane afford it, is now retired and needs a project to keep him out of trouble.
I need to find a new breakfast crowd, these guys have me nailed.

But, I have a friend with one, 160K and hardly a hiccup other than expected stuff. So go figure. I m on my way to the xmission shop with crd1 just now. Think it s the servo, replaced all four sensors, no change. I ll let them figure it out.

Hmmm... Maybe I just got lucky but :JEEPIN:

CRD is rock solid for me, other then some expected maintenance issues for such an old and high mileage vehicle. Had it for year or so now...

Did the timing belt, water pump/thermo, and diesel fuel filter @ 118k mi when purchased. Ran around on the off road mod tell I could get the GDE full torque Eco. I KNOW! Torque converter and all that (almost got hot tune)... No problems so far, really. Had to replace all my ball joints, that was kinda expensive, along with the battery, motor mounts, and front rotors (probably could of had them resurfaced, but the left one was really pretty bad and it was only like 50-60 bones for both rotors and set of AC-delco ceramic pads...) Also had to repair my sunroof (that actually really pissed me off, talk about CHEAP plastic parts). Was real PITA with out much for tools and the most worthless instructions... Was actually pretty easy, just getting it in and out was the hardest part... other then hammering down the tabs... Sorry rambling... Any way, just need to replace a tire pressure sensor and fix up the suspension (needs a lift any way). Really not THAT bad... the 100k timing belt thing is some BS for a diesel IMO but... What can you do?

My real problems with the jeep are 1) automatic sucks... 2) NO ground clearance, 3) no cabin air filter (upside is one less filter to be replacing though! :goink:

). And 4) I cant lay down comfortably enough in back with dog, t0oo dang small. Or maybe I'm too tall? And did I mention AT sucks?

Honestly, the others would be irrelevant with a manual tran but... in my dreams I guess.

Not bad for over 140K mi. Considering I paid 8k with shipping across con US and the 100k maint included... Really not that big a deal.

Getting like 19.9 to 21.x MPG in all city stop and accelerate to 50mph driving. Get like 26mpg free way and city driving combined when I get out of town.... Got over 24 pulling a car up a mountain range (Torque converter i know!) Only experienced slight shudder towing car up VERY steep hill (mountains) in Over drive at around 53-63 ish, just push the button on side of shifter lever and speed up to 65+ then can go back to OD fine up grade. Just that speed range....

Honestly, I've had MUCH MUCH MUCH more unreliable cars. I do want to get rid of it though, but wife loves it to death... But man the AT COMPLETELY kills the fun/toy factor, such a drag!!!! :banghead:

So I don't know... Need to get a new truck for my self... Thinking WK CRD or wk2 eco diesel maybe. IDK.

Would like to trade the Lib for an old Isuzu diesel I think, but wife needs a car and cant drive stick, so that means I'd never be able to drive the "nice" vehicle...

Remember that the people posting problems are the ones who've HAD problems. If you don't have an issue....

The diesel version sold far more over here (UK and Europe) than the petrol version because of the very poor petrol fuel consumption. Mine is one of the very few modded ones I've come across in the UK, and most of my mods have been put on because I wanted them. The Skid Row set and the TJM bumper went on because I started green laning and wanted the protection (and front recovery points); snorkel largely because I fancied it and wanted to get cleaner air in when driving in town or motorway, and only secondarily to better protect the air intake when wading; extending the breathers was for wading, and the GDE tune because the benefits in drivability and economy made it well worth while. The Weeks kit to delete the EGR completely was a no-brainer for diesels, and egr delete kits are common here for land rovers, and advertised in every 4wd mag. The OME suspension was for better clearance and vastly improved handling when the original suspension started to look tired, and the jba arms to replace the oems when the bushes clapped out. I upgraded the brakes and brake lines because I always have on every vehicle I've ever owned.

As for the engine, I have no idea why you all report such problems. This engine is common in London Black Taxis and was standard in LDV delivery vans - both doing thousands of miles a year, year after year. George at the VM specialists in Chesterfield has told me that he has seen these engines with half a million miles on them or more. The real pain with them is the cam belt rather than a chain which has to be changed regularly. Yes, you will get issues - whoever designed that thermostat probably needs to have his head examined, and I've had it replaced twice in 90k miles. I had a leak on the transmission cooler line which had to be replaced in Germany - but that was after 9 years wear and corrosion from English weather conditions, and the pinion bearing went out last September (also in Germany funnily enough) - but that sort of s**t happens in any vehicle and it was fine to drive me for another 1800 miles until I got it rebuilt.

Friends of mine who own Land Rovers have had and expect a number of issues. Chris carries 2 half shafts in the back of his (and a spare fuel pump) together with the tools to change them, and reckons to be able to swap out a half shaft in under half an hour by the side of the road - and he's had plenty of practise!

Can you get a Webasto TSL 17S installation kit and instructions there? I found the Webasto diesel heater here, but not the installation kit for our 2006 CRD.

I found installation instructions in German.

No idea. I know that there is a webasto importer over here, so that kit could probably be ordered, but it is unlikely to be kept in stock for KJs. Except for areas like the Cairngorms, we don't get arctic cold conditions - even now when its getting chilly its not much more than -1 in London at night and maybe -5 in the country, and then not really for long periods.

Living in Germany, Austria, alpine or Scandinavian countries on the other hand - they get WINTER! Europe has just had a massive snowfall in those areas.
