So, these are a little harder to diagnose since my scanner wont pick up this ecm other than global.
starts good, runs smooth
black smoke, cant hardly hear turbo

codes according to my scanner are p1263 p1267

CAC Tubes are ok
I cleaned MAP sensor, it was caked.
--with my scanner it reads 29inhg, im 1400 above sea level. WOT it will bump up to 37.5 and thats it.
Are these VGT Turbo?
--Does vgt/wastegate give issues? how do i check
Does the throttle plate give problems? maybe its stuck half shut?
Would stuck open EGR cause this?
-- i unplugged MAF and nothing changed

I'm not sure which codes to believe, but I'm almost positive it's not a glow plug code
Manufacturer controlled air metering is what makes more sense, seems how it's over fueling, or "under airing"

They are VGT and yes people have had issues with the vanes getting stuck. Its also possible for the vacuum actuator to fail or spring a leak causing to not be able to control the vanes.


A stuck EGR could cause this by dumping exhaust pressure to the intake.

Is that reading at idle or while driving?

Possible problems include:
MAP sensor
boost control solenoid (large vacuum solenoid behind air filter box)
vacuum leak
boost leak (hoses or intercooler)
stuck open EGR valve
stuck turbo vanes
worn or damaged rocker arms

Start with the easy items first.
Also, you may want to remove and inspect the turbo inlet hose for holes. And while the inlet hose is off, stick you fingers into the turbo and try to wiggle the shaft to see if there is excessive movement (front to back and side to side).

The codes may be totally unrelated to the low power/black smoke problem. And if you have never replaced your glow plugs its probably time to do so.

While you are at it, find a way to disable, block, or delete your EGR valve.

ok the 29inhg is at idle, 37.5 is max wide open throttle
ive pulled inake tube off and it is ok, little oily around, but the inlet of turbo and compressor wheel are clean, spins freely, no in and out play and common up and down litttle wiggle

it could be the rockers, i have replaced the whole shabang on another along with cams
if it were he rockers, i wouldnt think the engine would run and smooth and quiet as it does.

The map i think i have eliminated, 29inhg is around 14 psi which would be correct for where im at.
I believe im boosting about 4 psi ha

how do i check the boost solenoid? is there a way to move vanes open and closed or hear them functioning.
this would be much easier with a starscan ha

The vanes on the turbo are moved by a vacuum actuator.
High vacuum = high boost
low vacuum = low boost

At idle, vacuum is high.

With the engine idling, pull the vacuum line off the turbo actuator.
Can you feel vacuum from the line?
If yes, reconnect the vacuum line while looking down on the turbo and watching the actuator lever/arm on the turbo move. Disconnect and reconnect this line to ensure there is adequate movement of the lever. If little to no movement, then the vanes are stuck and should be cleaned.

If there is no vacuum at the line then the problem is with one of the two vacuum solenoids.
The small solenoid is just a on/off function that opens and closes the vacuum supply to the vacuum reservoir. It can be bypassed to restore turbo function if not working properly.
The larger solenoid actually controls vacuum to the turbo. It cannot be bypassed and usually makes a loud buzzing noise when going bad. It also has a little filter dangling from it that should be replaced if noticeably dirty.

I know on cummins vgt turbo there is a cleaning port, any such thing on these?
