Last week ordered a spare engine oil drain plug and two spare washers, just to be on the safe side before trying to install my Fumoto drain valve.

Today when I picked up the parts, I at first thought they'd screwed up and given me the plug for a 3.7 gasser. Instead of an allen wrench recess, this one had a big hex head on it like a "normal" drain plug.

I asked the parts guy to double-check. He said that the P/N for the old allen wrench plug had been superceded by the P/N for this new hex head plug.

I took a closer look at the plug, and sure enough, it had that funky Italian straight thread. New plug and two washers ran about $12.

They had to order the plug and washers, as they say I'm the only person with a CRD that ever comes by their dealership. Even though they're the largest CJD dealership in the area, given my previous experience with their sales and service departments, I can fully understand why!

I went in for just a spare washer and they had to special order one. Makes me wonder what they would do if I had come in for an oil change and needed it replaced?

I've got the 8mm plug, and I had bought an extra one last year just in case.

Get a picture of that "Jeep Green" CRD sport up in the photo section! We'd love to see it!

Do you have the part number for the new drain plug?
Is the old hex hed plug normal or do you need a special allen wrench? Dumb question I know but I was under there to change the oil and it appeared odd?

I contacted 2 Jeep dealerships in my area about the new oil drain plug & got the exact same reaction: HUH?

Apparently, nobody is aware of the change & they don't have any photos to look at either to see the difference.

I'm definately not too fond of the factory plug. The recess is showing signs of wear.

I have the factory plug and it took a 5/16 allen head to get it out when I did the OC this weekend.

I had my oil changed at a local Dodge dealership and they must not have know about the copper cruch type of gasket. THey put the drain plug back in so tight that it made for a interesting recent oil change. I went last month to Muffler Man down the road to have them change the oil. Their a great place as I uaed to use them all the time. Due to the Dealerships screw up they had to weld a nut onto the the drain plug to get it off. Then they had no idea about the special copper gasket. All is well now. Butwhat a PITA! Has anyone in here really had any luck with the Fumoto? I bought the Fumoto with the nipple and drain hose but am going to sell it in here. If I get one of those it will be the smaller one w/o the nipple.

mine was a pain to get off, but I hit it with some WD40 then waited five mins...and was able to break it loose without too much of a problem. I wouldn't mind having the newer type of plug though. My father-in-law has a torx T-50 size bolt for his trans drain plug on the 98 Chevy Suburban....needless to say Jiffy screw up, stripped it, and they left one of the bolts out of his pan when they serviced it....so i used an oil extractor to get most of the trans fluid out and then just dropped the pan....not the best design for a drain plug IMHO.

I explained to him what I noticed...and I added the fact that most of the trans pan bolts were so loose that I could turn them off by hand without even taking a wratchet to them...and then explained further that he should NEVER take your car to Jiffy Lube!

Did you get it from Greg at Lubespecialist.com with the adapter? Man I would not own this engine with a stock drain plug.

OldNavy, I ordered my Fumoto Drain Valve from the same person that everyone on here did. I got it from the link. It's been sitting in my garage for 6 + months now. I have the new oil drain plug now. What did you mean about not owning this engine with the stock drain plug? Is the Fumoto with the nipple going to fit on there WITH the stock skid plate and now have to wory about knocking it off or damaging it? I really don't off road my KJ at all. I have my LJ Rubicon to beat on. I just didin't know if the one with the nipple would fit with the stock skid plate. I surf in here and lurk more than posting and I trust pretty much anything you have to say about our KJ's as you seem to have alot of experiance in this field. Soo, bottom line, should I install that Fumoto w/ nipple next oil change or wait and purchase one w/o the nipple, or just stay with the newer drain plug? One other thing, if you instal the Fumoto, is that Copper Gasket going to last a long time? THanks in advance.
Thanks for the compliment man.

If you are not doing any off roading other then the ocassional gravel road or mild out to the country to fish or hunt then the nipple version will do fine and not be a problem. The nipple version just allows you to have a tube running to drain pan or jug and helps prevent messes. The copper crush gasket should last as long as the Fumoto is on the truck.

The reason for using the Fumoto with the adaptor is to prevent cross threading by someone not paying attention and then having a oil pan AFU and they are not cheap or easy to replace, ease of draining is secondary.

I have the Fumato with the nipple on my Liberty and have given it a moderate off road pounding. No problems yet. It hangs below the skid plate about 1/2 inch and seems protected in the front at least by a lower hanging, solid piece of metal. If you're worried about the clearance, just take a hack saw to it, but by all means USE it!
