So I have known that it was on its way out but yesterday it finally quit. Turned the key and nothing, everything comes on so I know my battery is fine and I can hear the click from the solenoid but nothing from the starter. Anyone have any tips on replacing it? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

You will want an extension just s bit over the length of the starter to get at the top bolt from underneath the vehicle. I just did mine, and this was the best way to get at that bolt. I also used serviceable locktite, so I didn't have to crank on them as much as the PO did. :(

Just got it swapped out and still nothing! I checked the fuses and relays by the battery and they look fine. Any suggestions where to check next?

Does the solenoid click?

Have you tried bypassing the relay to make it start?

You cannot check fuses or relays by just looking at them. Fuses you can check for continuity with a volt/ohm meter; relays I don't know about but it's easy to swap in one of the other relays to see if that helps. Check you Owner's manual for the appropriate fuses and relays including in cabin fuses. Let latter are push in fuses with 2 metal protrusions on the outer flat surface that can be used to check continuity without pulling the fuse.

Also check the chats at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60575&hilit=ignition+switch and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=61233&p=678574&hilit=+brother#p678574

Email me if you need the missing image in the second chat. Basically when you turn the key it turns a plastic rod, which can break, which in turn activates the ignition switch on the left side of the steering column which in turn sends a signal to the ECU asking "permission" to start the vehicle.

So was able to cross the terminals and the starter would turn. I did use a meter to check my fuses and relays. I also, found out the clicking I was hearing wasn't the relay is was something else (fuel heater maybe?). With my neighbor's help we held the ignition in the start position with a meter at each of the fuses and the relays and didn't get any readings. We finally made a jumper cable to go from the blade terminal on the starter to the battery and got her started. We are guessing now that my ignition switch is bad but aren't 100% sure. I am happy that my Jeep at least starts. Thanks for the assistance :)

I bought a 1/2" drive 10mm just for those stubborn bolts. They can be extra tight, but it looks like you got it. You want to sell your old starter?

Ignition switch on left side of steering column is BWD Ignition Starter Switch Part No. CS812 at Autozone or Airtex/Wells # 1S5932. More likely it's a bad lock cylinder housing actuator pin Dorman 924-704 or NAPA BK 6201414. The latter is relatively easy to check; see install video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5m31g0 ... plpp_video

FYI past experience of some is Dealer will want to replace the whole steering column if the actuator pin is bad.

Yea, that top bolt is ridiculous. Had to put a couple extensions together to even get my ratchet in there. I also, haven't verified if the old starter is bad or not, once I do I wouldn't mind selling it.

My father-in-law said the same thing. Once I take apart the column, I am going to try and figure out where my problem is. I will be posting updates once I am done. I super appreciate the follow-ups .

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!

So, while trying to balance my new 60 hour work schedule, I finally got to replacing the ignition switch. Super stoked, I take the switch off and as I do so, I pull a little to hard and breake the metal "U" hugging the plastic actuator pin :banghead: :furious:

Needless to say, I was not happy with myself, buuuuuut as of now the new actuator pin and ignition switch are installed. I hooked the starter back up to the wiring harness and got rid of my jumper cable and everything starts and runs!!! w00t!!!

Thanks again for the assists!
