Changed the oil. Used a Fram PH8A filter. Added 6.3 quarts. Dipstick showed at t he MIN mark. The Fram was larger than what it replaced. I assumed the old filter was OEM. I added the remaining oil up to 7 quarts assuming that the Fram was size equivalent to the Mobile filter. Right or wrong? Is she gonna blow oil? Oh, I read the NOOB guide. Don't know how to paste the pic on the Kindle.

Not sure why you'd risk such an expensive engine with such a crappy oil filter? Fram filters were singled out by Cummins several years back and have still continued to have problems with regards to loose internal parts coming apart and killing engines via oil starvation.

Drop 7 quarts in and it'll be fine. I'd seriously ditch the fram though.

Simple reason. Didn't know. Hence the reason I read this forum. Haven't seen that about Fram.

I have cut open several brands of filters. Out of all or them Frams were the poorest quality by a large margin.

I use a WIX 51515XP synthetic media filter. The WIX 51515 is the non-synthetic media version. It is a larger size filter and is a direct replacement for the Fram PH8A. I paid about $7 each including shipping from http://www.Rockauto.com. I bought 14 filters which yielded the lowest cost per filter with shipping.

I have heard good things about the Fram Ultra filters but I would use WIX if the Ultras were not available. The people at BITOG seem to think the Ultras are pretty good when I last checked which was a year ago or so. I use the XG8A on my jeep and XG10575 on my F150.

I just did an oil change and used the fram XG8A.
I've used the regular PH8A in the past and didn't see a problems with it. Although I am aware the Fram has had some quality control problems.

The motorcraft FL-1A is also a good filter. Used it many times.

Just a reminder to the OP that the oil dipstick level reading varies from CRD to CRD and is extremely sensitive to "tilt" of the vehicle. To get an accurate level reading be sure you are parked on a flat surface and wait like 5 minutes for the oil to drain to the pan if the engine has been running. The consensus is 6.3-.4 qts for stock size filter (ex. WIX 51516 or NAPA Gold equivalent and 7qts for oversize (ex. WIX 51515 or NAPA Gold equivalent). To check your dipstick for accuracy install filter; add indicated amount of oil; briefly run vehicle; park of flat surface for 5 minutes or so; check level on dipstick mark if need be to show correct full level. FYI the correct low mark would be the same distance below any new full mark as the distance between the OEM markings.

Thanks for all the responses. Fram did eventually pony up. I don't think I am up for a fight like that. Not worth my time. I plan on changing the filter. Anyone change JUST the filter? Will it dump all the oil in the pan?

You can change just the filter without loosing all the oil! Just replace with a new filter and add oil back to the full mark...

The Purolator Pure One PL30001 and the new Purolator Synthetic oil filter PSL30001 made especially for synthetic oils are both very good filters as well...
The Purolator Pure One filters are one of the top rated oil filters in the country!!!!
Reviews are on the web for those interested!

If you have a NAPA nearby, use a NAPA gold 1515 and use 7 qts. of oil.

I just bought out my local Meijer's stock of Purolator synthetic 30001's. They were dumping all of them for $4.99 a piece. I just couldn't resist.

Amazon doesnt know everything.

Heck, the local autoparts store will tell you that it doesnt fit.

But the M1-301 does fit.
