So while replacing my glow plugs, I of course had to take the intake elbow off and I noticed a fair amount of oily blow by in the tube. Is this normal? I have had the weeks stage 1 & 2 with a GDE eco tune for a couple of months now.

Thanks guys and gals!

Yes and it's not blow by. These engines suck oil mist from the top of the engine directly into the turbo. The intercooler will collect a bit of oil also. This is normal and has been discussed many times. If you search it, you can read for days.

Gotcha, sorry about that...I tried searching but must have been using the wrong verbiage. Thanks for the quick answer!!

Nothing unusual on any internal combustion engine. Back prior to the late 1960s or so crankcase system's oily mist was simple vented to atmosphere but early in the quest to reduce pollution crankcases were plumbed back to the intake via a PCV or CCV so that nasty stuff got burned as part of normal combustion. On the CRD the CCV looks like a black hockey puck on top of the engine and vents to just in front of the turbo>thru the intercooler>to the intake.

Gotcha, I guess it's time for the elephant hose mod!!

I apologize in advance for the snark but why would you want to change your 2006 CRD into a smoking dripping oil on the road pre-1965 pollution monster? Other than being tough on CAC hoses and the airbox to turbo hose (Samco or idparts silicone hoses fix the former and my airbox hose is fine at 53K miles and only costs like $65 to replace) the oil does not cause any harm to the engine. The exception is suspended soot from the EGR but you have the GDE tune so soot is a minor, at best, issue. FYI if you live in a cold climate the elephant hose mode has been known to freeze up and the attendant crankcase over pressure will blow out a rear main seal; to fix think drop tranny to get access. If you just "have" to get the oil out of the system do a Provent filter which captures the oil so from time to time the minor amount collected can be drained to a catch can.

Pardon the rant; no flaming please.

Totally normal on this engine. The right way to counter the oil mist issue is with a set of Samco silicon CAC hoses (parts number TCS-380) and a MANN ProVent 200 (part number 3931070550).

Warning: do your research before implementing this mod. Aside from dripping oil on the ground, it also increases the chances of blowing your main seal. Especially risky if you live in a cold climate.

Do not do the EHM, there are sound reasons not to perform this mod!!!!
Best solution is to install a Provent filter, it should have been installed from the factory when the Jeep CRD's were built but Chrysler cheaped out...
There are many reasons not to do the EHM as we have learned in the last few years, the CCV needs some vacuum to perform correctly, read this thread and you will understand:
Kinda long, but very educational...

One thing we probably ought to figure out is a way to install a drain petcock into the bottom of the charge air cooler.

At least it'd cut down on the oil that accumulates in the 'CAC Sump'.

Crasher, Without a Provent coalescing filter with drain installed to trap the excess oil, that's not a bad idea at all....

Like to re-state most emphatically that the elephant hose mod is not such a good ide for this engine. It changes the balance of pressures it was designed around. Not such a good idea. The ProVent (or similar) as has been mentioned but retaining a closed system is the recommendation.
