This Jeep hates me. Every project I have done on this vehicle has met with incredible headaches. Broken bolts, stripped out threads, and now a broken drill bit in the manifold. I was attempting to drill the pilot hole through one of the engine cover mounts on the passenger side of the engine. The bit broke off flush in the bottom of the hole. It can't be drilled because I don't want all that crap in the motor. I'm not due for a timing service for a while so I don't want to pull the manifold. The bit isn't going anywhere, I shot an x-ray of the area and could see that there is about an inch of bit jammed in the metal and only the very end broke through the inner surface. The only place it could wiggle out to is up. I tapped the surface above it and put a plug in to seal it in there until I can pull the manifold. I went to check on the bit just out of curiosity the other day, and the hole had a little fluid in it. It smelled sweet. What fluid, if any, would be up there? It is a confusing and terrifying discovery. Anyone experience anything like this? Have people running their boost gauge lines off that spot encountered fluid in the line?

If you don't have lots of white smoke and coolant consumption, it's probably just a nearby coolant leak. Are you losing any coolant?

EDIT: Wait a second, I was thinking EGT and exhaust manifold. You drilled the passenger side of the intake? Are you in the EU or Australia or South Africa, etc?

US. That's where I saw several people put theirs. Every forum mentions using those engine cover bosses. Am I on the wrong side? The turbo is over there so shouldn't that be the cold side? Haven't noticed any coolant loss.

Got a picture of the install location? For the life of me, I can't figure where you drilled the hole.

anyway, your drilling licence has been suspended for time been. well if you drill it in coolant jacket (HOPE NOT) yes coolant taste sweet. if can not remove drill bit leave in and epoxy it for good and do not play with fire again.

Look at the pic below, this is where I installed mine, with weeks kit it's fairly easy.



I have well over 20k since I did this and it's working good, no leaks, all ok. The metal is reasonably thick there and it's safe also to thread as metal shavings will fall down, provided you remove the elbow. I also have a gauge write-up in the tech forum for more details if you need.

Another alternative is to get weeks intake, it comes already with a 1/8npt port, if you don't feel like drilling. Pretty much anywhere you have pressure, from turbo outlet till valve cover, including intercooler (I don't recommend you installing in plastic though) you can mount the probe.

Without a pic it's hard to tell what it could be. My first guess would be a coolant leak somewhere. I have metal cac's and welded a bung onto one and that's where my boost gauge taps in to.

I don't see where to attach a pic from a phone. Bottom line is I'm on the wrong side. I put a little epoxy ball on the end of the bit for hopes and dreams. The cap over the hole should keep crap out of there. Eventually I'll pull the manifold and get it from the other side. Thanks for the replies.
