Here's some recent pics from my trip to Coral Bay and Ningaloo Stn in the North West of WA - about 1200km's North of Perth. I spent a week in the area, a couple of nights in Coral Bay at the Caravan Park, then 5 nights at Ningaloo Station camping in the dunes right next to the beach.

It was overcast and rained intermittently the whole week unfortunately, so not the best time to be there! But still, got out the fishing rod and caught a couple of GT's from the beach on lures, and generally relaxed and went exploring in the KJ. Got as far north as Yardie Creek, but it was impassable (especially without a snorkel!)

The KJ performed flawlessly and returned fuel economy for the trip of 8.5L per 100km fully loaded (it was heavy with Fridge, spare battery in the rear, water, food, camping gear etc) cruising at 105-110km/h. It handled the offroad sections with aplomb, climbed dunes and did a fair bit of beach work. The BFG AT's I am especially impressed with, tough, stable and great grip on the road, sand and mud. Very comfortable on the road - drove 1200km's home in one stretch yesterday. That diesel is a magic little engine! Plenty of power for overtaking too and smooth at highway revs.

I wouldn't bother to take a second spare tyre next time - its heavy - if you use the right pressures off road there shouldn't be a problem, plus the BFG's are tough! My dad did puncture a tyre off road on his Patrol (Cooper LT ATR's) when he picked up a nail. We patched it and re-inflated it then used it as the spare for the rest of the trip after swapping it over.

Only real hassle with the KJ is a bit limited for space to pack everything - the roof basket was definitely one of the best investments I've made for it. I'd take a boat up there next time on a trailer though, so some gear could go in that. Being a diesel it did use a bit of oil for the 2500km's we did - about half a litre. I took the essential spares of air filter, oil filter, fuel filter and oil with me so no drama topping it up.

There's a small vid here:-

Nice setup. I really like how you use the canopy over the tent for camping. I might have to remember that for the next time I can go camping with mine.

You can see the waves faintly on the outer reef in one of the shots - not much good for surfing all the way out there though.

Canopy over tent is good for when its raining - just keeps things dryer. When its sunny we sit under it and the tent is out in the open.
