Sorry for the noob question. If so, how do I tell if it's occurring?

Regens are for diesels with dpf (diesel particulate filter) and scr (selective catalytic reduction). Urea (def - diesel exhaust fluid) is used in scr to reduce nox. Regens occur to burn the soot in the dpf. They occur based on flow of the dpf, so when that's getting closed to be clogged, there is diesel injected in the dpf to help increasing the temperature to burn the soot. I hope I explained correctly. The crd does not have any of those, thankfully, it just has a catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter can get sort of plugged up and reduce exhaust flow sometimes. That can usually be fixed with a little Italian tune up and you should be fine.

DPF and SCR systems are found on 2007+ vehicles, IIRC.

2007 is when the more strict standards went into place. Also when ULSD was introduced as well.
