My '06 CRD Limited crossed 100k recently, and has developed some oil leaks. Unfortunately, I was taking it to a dealer, and they didn't catch it until it had starved the turbo and now its got a lot of play and a damaged impeller and I need to replace it. Worse, they tell me it starved it because of a pressure loss that they can't identify, so they've given me a quote for ~$8k that is basically "we're going to replace the turbo and pretty much everything on that side of the engine so we can be sure we fix that oil pressure loss". Makes sense I suppose, but for that price I gather I can buy a reman (maybe not the turbo though?), and I'm skeptical that they'll get it right if they can't even tell where the problem is.

Does this sound reasonable? Would you do it? Any suggestions or alternatives you can think of? If it were just the turbo, I'd do it, but the rest of it... They had also just replaced all the hoses (after finding the leak in the first place), so I'm wondering if they might have screwed something up? Not that they would admit it, but if I could identify it as a cause of the turbo oil starvation, I might have some leverage on the overall repair.

I've been lurking here (thanks noob guide, cleaned my MAP, did the ORM, couple other little things, thanks everyone!) for a while, and it seems like it could be a good time to do a egr delete kit and clean up after replacing the turbo, but I don't have the time or the tools to do it myself, alas.

before you buy new turbo , i would remove it and cap off oil feed line and run it up to temp and monitor oil pressure also listen for noises if any , drain some oil and cut oil filter open , look for metal in it ,,, if pass all this tests then it is safe to spend some many for new turbocharger,

Exactly where are all these oil leaks? Is it only the turbo?
Was there oil leaking into the exhaust causing lots of smoke?

If the turbo died, then allowed all the oil to dump out the exhaust, that could be catastrophic for the engine.
If the turbo died due to lack of oil, thats not good either.
The oil line to the turbo is fed from the same gallery that feeds the crankshaft bearings. So if the turbo lost lubrication there is a chance that the engine did too.
Lets hope thats not the case.

A new turbo will cost about $1000-1500, depending on where you buy it from.
IDparts.com sells them and so does SasquatchParts.com.

So you can try just replacing the turbo and hope that gets it working again.
Hopefully you wont need a new engine.

(that $8000 quote tells me that they dont want to deal with the repair and are just trying to run you off. Depending on where you live there are folks here that might be willing to travel any help you fix it)

I haven't had any smoke issues since I last cleaned the MAP sensor and did the ORM, and then it was only under heavy accel a year ago, so probably not dumping oil into the exhaust.
The report was that the turbo lacked oil, and there is still no oil pressure on it's feeds. Unclear on the engine, it seems like that's what part of the large estimate will handle, opening it up and replacing gaskets, etc. Sounds like they are hedging their bets in case it's worse, but that's why I'm extra hesitant on this one...

I'm in Madison, WI, if there's anyone nearby. I'd be up for having it towed somewhere nearby, or if someone is able to pick it up we can talk.

Thanks for the info on the Sasquatch turbo, if I fix it I'll go that way for sure.

Like rankom said, it wouldn't take much too plug the turbo oil feed and run the motor and see if the motor has oil pressure(I'm gonna guess it does). Then order a new turbo, install kit is prolly best as well. Turbo failure is common if the wrong oil has been used and not allowing proper cool down time. Off topic, but Has the timing belt been changed? I sent you a pm

Have you tried towing to Diesel Injection Service, Windsor WI. Just off 90/94 at Hwy 19 exit. Only diesel work and they have done some CRD timing service in the past.

Forgot where I got the copy, likely from another LOST member, but IIRC it came from some sort of DCJ "training" manual distributed to dealers way back when. just a thought , again I'm sorry i like old school , so i would install mechanical oil pressure gauge at the banjo fitting (turbo oil supply line) just to se what your engine oil pressure is ? we have guys here that did complete overhaul on this engine so I'm expecting they will reply soon , I'm just thinking if the crank bearing spun (HOPE NOT) that can restrict oil gallery and starve turbo ,i remember seeing this on other engines , please don't install new turbocharger before investigating

See viewtopic.php?f=98&t=74754 about oil pressure gauge install using upper gallery "port" behind where turbo supply line connects. Access is tight but if you read thru the string you will see that McMaster-Carr has a fitting that will work without machining and you can easily obtain a braided stainless steel "hose" typically used in racing to remote mount the oil pressure sending unit.

Will be checking with them on the diagnostics, my buddy uses them for his CRD and recommends them as well. Between them and jws, hopefully I can get it figured out and back in service!
