Trans leak

My "new" to me 09 liberty decided the trans wants to leak. Now it seems like the leak is coming from the top right of the trans from what I could see. There was definitely no oil on the left side top. My first thought was front pump seal until I saw the fluid at the top. It also seems to drip when the vehicle isnt running as well. I park it on a slight incline.

My first thought is its overfull from the dealer and leaking out the dipstick tube and traveling down and back.

Is this a leak anyone has experienced???Any help would be appreciated before it goes to the shop.

Is it coming from the breather maybe?
The fill tube is lower right. May be the cooler lines?

I have an 04 Liberty that developed a transmission leak.
I immediately suspected the transmission pan but after I replaced it I discovered my transmission cooling lines were actually leaking and had to be replaced.

Honestly not sure. I'm away from the vehicle at this point. My wife just sent me pics. I may have to wait another week before I'm home. I was hoping there was a common leak point like other 42rle's. I don't have time to pull the trans so it's going to go to a shop. Don't want to be hosed

I'm starting to think it's over full and leaking out the fill tube or breather like scar mentioned. As soon as the wife moved it to slightly flatter ground it pretty much stopped leaking.

I got a dipstick on order and my torque app ready.

Does anyone know if the dealer charges to check the level??

Yep they will charge you to check it.
If a dealer could get away with it, they would charge you to walk in the door! :juggle:

But you mentioned in your first post, it might be "overfull from the dealer". If that is the case, then they should fix it!

I bought it from a dealer 500 km from me..so not going to go there. But ill check the level myself.

Wishful thinking is its just overfull.

This is odd....but it seems the leak is getting worse yet hasnt been driven...

Well I checked the fluid today. Using my dorman dipstick and torque app it was over 120mm at 170*. It is severely overfull.

What is the easiest way to remove some fluid? Like pull off the return trans line?

Not sure how well that would do it. There is an in-line valve that opens only after it reaches operating temp.
Maybe a hand pump with a small tube that will fit into the fill tube would work.

Thats funny. That was my exact plan I came up with after posting.

I change my inboard motor oil that way in the boat. Can't get to the drain plug so I pull the dipstick, stick the hose in the dipstick tube, and suck it dry. Change the filter and refill it.

Turkey baster and 3' of 5/16 tube worked just fine. Slow but fine. So far no leaks have shown up.

Cool deal. I wonder if they did a trany service and forgot to drop the pan and replace the filter?
