What kind of laptops do you all have? Im thinking of getting one for college, well my parents are. I want AMD, ATI video, but would settle for NVIDIA, wireless internet+wired, under $1500. I will not be doing much gaming on it. Mostly papers and internet crap. I may from time to time play games in class, so I want a good video card, fast FSB, over 40GB hard drive, big screen, etc.

I was looking at HP and they seem to be really cheap, almost to cheap. I like gateway, but they do not have AMD. TIA!!

I have a Compaq R4000. It has ATI, an AMD 64-bit 3200 processor, and 512 megs of ram, 17" widescreen, wireless internet, DVD RW, and an 80GB hard drive. I've had it for almost a year and I'm pretty happy with it. I used to never like Compaq at all, but couldn't pass up the deal I got with this one. Got mine for about $800, and I think regular price was $1500 +/-.

Compaq and HP are one now so it might not be too bad. Go to a best buy and play with them all to find the one you want. :D

I hope that helped.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 that has lasted me since I graduated high school (4 years ago0 I've put a new larger hard drive in since then and it seems to be running just fine. It has an Intel Pentium 4 Processor, but Dell dropped Intel earlier this year and I can't remember who their new Processor supplier is right now. I've had to get a new wall outlet adaptor too since I've owned it but it was covered under warranty so that was a snap to get replaced. been solid ever since....i have a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM in it too, running wireless here at my parents house and even while I lived at the dorm i was. They make a docking bay for it too so you can hook up a larger monitor and a regular keyboard and an external mouse instead of the 2 different types they have on the laptop itself (the little ball in the center of the keypad and then the finger pad). I like it, will keep it for a long time if I can....it does get really warm though...so try and keep the rear of it elevated, I keep a book under the back side of mine and it works just fine though...

Congrats on graduation though...Enjopy College and live it up, it goes by REAAAAAALLLYYY quick, trust me I know...

HP and Compaq use AMD processors in their notebooks. Most of the other makers use Intel Core Duo. I have an IBM which is now owned by Lenovo, its a great machine, very durable, the mouse is a little eraser head looking thing in the center of the keyboard, it also has the trackpad, the eraser head looking thing is very easy to use. I am currently looking at a Macintosh since they went to Intel processors you can run OSX and windows. Since I mostly use Internet and office applications the Mac is a great choice, the other thing I like about it is that it has some great programs for handling digital photos and video and of course itunes. Apple and other makers have really good student purchase programs so check out the manufacturers web sites before you buy and look at the student discounts.

I am a big AMD fan, but the Core Duo smacks the poop out of anything AMD has to offer in the mobile market. Get a Dell with a core duo, and use a cupon from this link to save cash!

I just got a mac book. This is my first mac and I really like it going to get win xp this weekend for it. You can dual boot or run some software from http://www.parallels.com and it lets you run both os's at the same time.

I got the middle model of MacBook Pro (was the top when I bought it two months ago) and got $500 off through the Apple Developer Connection Student Membership (the membership costs $100, so it's really "only" $400 off). If you get one go cheap and get two seperate sticks of RAM instead of one big stick, in theory this will give you dual channel capability which will be faster. I also got the slow hard drive because by the time it actually fills up I can replace it with a larger, faster, cheaper one. I run both Mac OS X and Windows on it, both of which run like a charm with Boot Camp

I've got a Dell Latitude for work with Pentium M (this was before core duo), 17" widescreen, 40GB hard drive, DVD/CD recorder, 1 GB of ram, wired+wireless+modem, and a bunch of other goodies, and love it. No matter what you get, get a laptop with a widescreen, you will love hte extra screen real estate. It will also run 5+ hours on battery before needing a charge.
