Yup, another vibration thread.

Started a few months back. '05 CRD has 120K miles

Vibration / drone starts at 40 mph and ends around 45-48 mph. 50 mph, and above that it no vibration / drone.

When I let up on the throttle, it stops.

Can feel it in the steering wheel and has an audible drone.

Have replaced front driveshaft CV's, both front wheel bearings, motor mounts and RF CV axle.

I noticed the new and old RF CV axle had a lot of lateral / side to side play where it goes into the pumpkin. LF does not.

This seems suspicious to me (??)

Removed the front driveshaft and noticed the vibration was barely detectable.

About 3 years ago I had a Detroit TruTrac installed in the front. I was present during the installation and all the bearings and gears were in good shape. Yellow bluing used for confirming proper tooth contact.

Thoughts? :furious:

Are the boots intact on the front driveshaft? Typically one wil go bad and allow dirt in. You can usually tell by it slinging grease around the floor of the jeep. Also, remove the rear driveshaft and check both u joints

Be sure to actually remove it to check. Trying to check it in place doesn't work as others have found out.

Also, have you ruled out tyre balance issues.

What kind of tires are you running, I fixed my problems with new tires.

New tires (BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2) and wheels about 3 months ago. Had them re-balanced and rotated today. No change in vibration. Made the same effect with my previous tires (Wrangler DruraTrac)

Only vibrates starting about 45 mph to about 52 mph. During the vibration, I feel it in the steering wheel and also has an audible drone sound, but quits when I let off the accelerator momentarily and restarts when I accelerate back to the normal speed.

Gremlin??

I think I have something similar. Mine comes back when I drive through a right hand curve above 55 mph.

I have an appointment with a suspension specialist on Tuesday. He'll put it up on the rack and run it through all the gears at different speeds and listen to all the moving stuff it's attached to with a stethoscope. Even though it won't be under a load, it may be enough to detect some irregular sound.

*fingers crossed*

I had Bridgestone Revos that caused me all kinds of grief. Rotated them front to back, and the noise in the front moved to the back.

*** UPDATE ***

Had a reliable mechanic that I have used several times in the past go over all the possibilities yesterday (12-14).

Removed the front drive shaft. No change.

While on the rack, he jacked up all 4 corners and ran it at the offending speeds (45-50 mph) while another guy used a stethoscope on or near all the rotating parts. No unusual noise.

The only issue he found was the rear upper control arm (boomerang) was pretty loose in the "ball joints". However I had replaced it a few months ago. I called the parts supplier and they are sending be a new one (under the one year warranty). The mfg. was CROWN and generally a better quality than most from what I've read.

Can't imagine the vibration that comes in only on throttle pressure and not coasting (at the 45-50 mph) and that can be felt in the steering wheel is coming from the rear??? But he seems to think that MAYBE it could ???

The vibration is present at any engine RPM at the 45-50 mph with the OD on or off.

Is it possible that some internal transmission / torque converter / transfer case / differential(s) cause a vibration that can be felt in the steering wheel and only under throttle pressure ?? He did NOT check any those items. He was mainly checking the obvious rotating masses.

And to recap, I have new tires / wheels AND recently rotated and rebalanced. AND this vibration was present with my old tires / wheels.

I've run out of scenarios as were else to look. :dizzy:

Is there anything from the front axles through the hubs that could cause movement against the steering?

Is the steering wheel vibration you feel rotational, or some other vibration?

That's a GREAT point about about something up against a rotating parts housing. I'll be checking that for sure in the morning.

The vibration does not feel rotational. Just a vibration. The best I can describe it is a "high rpm" vibration as opposed to a low one. Smooths out just before 55 mph but still some very faint vibration, but at this point I may be feeling things that are normal... *paranoid*

Thanks for your input GordnadoCRD!!

Maybe the boomerang's a different case, but in general I haven't heard anything good about Crown brand parts on this forum.

*** UPDATE 2.0 ***

Replaced the upper rear control arm. It was waranteed so replaced it, but didn't think it had anything to do with the vibration ... which of course didn't.

I have no idea what to check next.

Just a recap: Vibration (audible drone as well) is felt in the steering wheel between 40 and 50 mph. It only occurs under throttle pressure not in "coasting". Another way to describe it is at 45 mph, and let off the throttle, the vibration / noise stops. Resume speed and it comes back.

Front driveshaft (with new CV's) removed offers no change.

RF axle replaced : no help. LF axle (original) is tight with NO movement

Motor mounts replaced about a year ago. (maybe a bad one??)

Question: The new RF axle has movement laterally as well as in / out ... just like the one I replaced. Is this normal?

Tires new and re-balanced / rotated.

?????????????????????????????????????????

I didn't re read the whole thread so sorry if this is repeated. Have you taken the rear driveshaft off and inspected the u joint?

Thanks for you reply.

Yes, and the rear driveshaft has new u joints and was also removed to verify that they were moving freely.

Generally speaking, when problems are felt in the steering wheel or in the seat, that generally indicates the location being in the front or the rear.

The only thing that wasn't done was to remove the rear driveshaft and run it with it off. I'm assuming that's possible to do??

I suspect your pinion bearing is going out or the crush washer preload has changed.

I had something very similar in my 2001 Subaru Forester 5 speed. A vibration just like you described not sure if I felt it in the steering wheel. It ended up being a bearing in the transmission. I know different vehicle but sounds very similar.

I kinda was leaning toward that too as one of the possibilities. However, the vibrations are there even with the front driveshaft removed. ??

Interesting. I think I read a post a while back where they had a similar noise and said it was the torque converter. Wonder if anyone else has had or know of this???
