i guess i would call the noise more of a rattle then a knock but my best guess is maybe the rockers. Its had this noise for a few months now and the noise get better and worse from time to time but overall more noticeable. cant hear it in the engine bay or out side, only while in the cab. i have to drive across country next week so need to know how high of a priority it is to figure this out.

More than likely the motor mounts; they are hydraulic mounts and go bad. Most likely the left hand or drivers side mount!
I replaced both of mine last year and I was amazed at the difference; the rattle at idle was gone! After I got the mounts off, if you shook the left hand mount in your hand, it had a loud rattle internally!
Also look at tensioner pulley on serpentine belt and see if it is bouncing real bad at idle; the spring in them get weak with age and allow the belt to bounce real bad and that can make a noise at idle!

The rattle noise sounds almost like a heat shield and I think one of the engine mounts has a heat shield on it. I'm not as mechanic savvy as I use to be but I'm willing to try trouble shooting to help narrow the problem.

Also check your transmission dipstick tube.
When I had a bad metallic rattle it turned out to be a broken transmission dipstick tube.
Not a showstopper, just annoying.

Get out of the vehicle and listen around until you find the source of the noise. Mine used to make sort of a jingling noise at idle; turned out to be a broken exhaust hanger that was vibrating against the exhaust pipe.

FYI: When my motor mount was bad, the only place I could hear the rattling noise was setting in the drivers seat with the door shut. It always seemed to be worse when the AC was turned on. Once motor mounts were replaced, all ratting noise was gone!!!

I agree, it could be your engine mounts. It's a (relatively) inexpensive and easy fix.

I've replaced mine twice now--they seem to go bad after 40K-45K miles. For me, the strange noises disappeared after the swap.

Order them from ID Parts.

Our engine mounts dont seem to be the best of design for a diesel. Has anyone ever thought of redesigning them?

The 2002/2004 export CRD had standard style engine mounts that last for ever. You do get a little more vibration transmitted through the steering wheel tho. Not sure if the cross member is the same between the 2002-2004 and 2005-2007
