 Post subject: 4 wheel drive not engaging

It's great, whenever it is muddy I remember I have a rear wheel drive 4x4, I assume there is an acuator on the front axle? The transfer case seems to shift fine but all I get is rear wheel spin.

Are you putting it into part-time or full-time?
part-time is true 4wd.
full-time is more like AWD.

When you move the transfer case lever, is there tension? Or does the lever just seem to flop in between positions?

All 4wd engagement is done in the transfer case. There is nothing in the front axle to engage or disengage.

Is yours an 05 or 06?
The 2005 CRD has a limited slip rear diff. The 06 does not and relies on the traction control system.
Both 05 and 06 have a open diff in the front.

Driving over low traction surfaces (mud or soft sand) is as much about driving technique as it is about the driveline. Lightly applying the brake while accelerating will help evenly distribute torque to all 4 wheels.

In part-time the front and rear driveshafts are fully locked together and will cause binding when trying to turn while on pavement. But because of the factory open front diff, it has a few limitations. But if you installed a Dana30 locker up front... :twisted:

Full-time is AWD just like the Subaru (well, maybe not exactly the same).
You can use it pretty much all the time.

Thanks. The last 4x4 I had was a 92 GMC Jimmy.. it was either RWD 4 high or 4 low.. Not used to the third option. Lockers well some day :JEEPIN:

Part time, full time, low range. The funny thing is it feels like it is in 4 wheel drive when i go around a corner in my driveway, I'm constantly forgetting to take my vehicles out of 4 wheel drive when I leave, but I drive in the slick mud covered hardpack the rear tires just slip, I can go give it another try. It is an 05, good to know it should have LSD. I wonder if my tires aren't getting enough traction.

To the part time full time question, full time 4x4 usually called awd have a viscous coupling or limit slip differential in the transfercase, your subaru had an odd transmission with a differential between the engine and the transmission, 2 half shaft outputs up there, and a drive shafts out the back.

Part time has a solid shaft, when you go around a corner you will find the front end binds up. Combo vehicles habe a lockable LSD in the transfercase.

Another thing...

With this transfer case, you have to anticipate the need for part-time 4wd.
If you wait until you are stuck or almost stuck you wont get full engagement.
The transfer case engages best while rolling slowly in neutral.

Alright I put it in 4wd locked center diff where I usually park it, it is raining here today so the back yard is a real slip n slide, it defiantly hooks up that way, this thing acts quite a bit different from the way I recall the 98 gc with full/part/2wd transfer case bUT that was too many years ago so perhaps I miss remembered. Thanks.

Subarus awd is generally better than these jeeps Full-Time mode. The subarus either use a viscous coupling in the center on the manual transmission cars, or a electronic system on the auto cars which can send torque where it needs to go. I think the autos normally run 90/10 until they slip. I had a manual 07 Legacy and my wife had a auto 09 legacy and both worked really well.

Full time is better than nothing though, I use it whenever the roads are slick. The jeep powerslides pretty well in Full-time too when the roads are covered, I've never had it send all the power to the front wheels.

Also, I thought the LSD in the rear was only optional in 05 as part of the off-road package? Then they got rid of the option in 06 because they went to 4 wheel independent traction control?

When it dries out in a couple days I'll jack mine up and check it, mine is a limited but I don't know if it has the off road package.

Your local DCJ dealer can provide a build sheet, should be free, based on your VIN. If you have the optional LSD on your 05 it should be listed.
