 Post subject: Uh-Oh! Engine Warning Light on!

Help!

Got into my CRD today and went to back out of a parking space. It felt like I was trying to back out with the parking brake on, so I stopped and looked, but my parking brake was off. I put it up and down twice just to be sure it was really, truly off, then cranked the wheels and continued to back out. Took way too much gas pedal to get the car pulled out, still felt sluggish like I was riding the brake, but of course I was not.

I got rolling forward and looked and noticed the yellow warning light was steadily on, and the ESP was flashing like crazy! WTF?

I stopped again, put it in park and shut it off. Counted to ten. Restarted, engine warning light came back on steadily and I drove home with just a bit of sluggishness.

The manual says most likely it is bad fuel, but the engine sounded fine and revved fine, it felt like the thing was in the wrong gear or had the brakes on or something...

Any ideas? It's a 2006 CRD with only about 2,500miles!

I would think if it was the ESP that was malfunctioning...it might be applying the brakes thinking it is saving you from a skid...That is all I can come up with. Let us know what the "S"tealer says the problem is.

Did you try disengaging the ESP with the button on the steering column?

Yes, quite possibly bad fuel.

Bad fuel is likely bad for being full of water and general crud, all of which would plug up your fuel filter, and that would both set the CEL and make the thing have no power. That said, of course, there are other possible causes, but if it is a load of bad go-juice, the cure is both simple (though expensive) and not covered by DCs warranty.

A plugged fuel filter will not bother the idle or out-of-gear revving of the engine, which after all takes virtually no fuel flow to maintain. It will, however, restrict fuel flow and therefore power when the engine has to drag the vehicle around.

If it is bad fuel plugging the filter, the error code will probably be P00093, and you will need to have the tank drained and flushed, and the filter replaced, which will cost a few hundred dollars. The filter is $40, the rest labor, as the tank needs to be removed from the vehicle in order to be drained. (Don't get me started on the wisdom of fuel tanks without drain plugs -- hardly any vehicles have them anymore.)

Ask them to save you a fuel sample, including the fuel from the filter housing, along with the filter, and then go to see whoever sold you your last tankful. Take your receipt (you did save it, didn't you?). The fuel vendor should pay for the repairs, and will not likely put up a fight, as this sort of thing happens often enough they all carry insurance to pay for claims just like yours. In fact, you probably won't need the filter/fuel sample, although the receipt might be needed.

And for what it is worth, it is suggested you only buy diesel fuel from suppliers who sell a fair amount of it, so you are unlikely to get bad fuel. Also for what it is worth, the other day I was talking with a guy who's job is rebuilding diesel fuel injection systems, and he told me there'd been a real plague of work lately due to bad fuel, particularly water. We speculated together that this was due to lingering effects of last fall's hurricanes and the cuurrent high prices that lead people to use/sell substandard fuel they would have not used before. But who knows.

I had a similar issue occur when I started and stopped very quickly after only moving a couple of feet. It seemed to throw off the ESP off. It was the second day I had the rig. It also had a bad axel noise and a couple of other issues so I compained and they got me another one. That one has been fine for 2500 miles other than the latest recall. Unfortunately, I never got any details on the ESP issue.

In case it is a fuel issue, what fuel were you running? I'm in the area and was going to fill up with B99 from a spot I think I've seen you mention...

Well, I'm running about B75... B99 from Seaport Biofuels and Premium Diesel from Shell next door...

But as I stated, I turned it back on and drove home on the freeway without a problem. Acceleration and power were fine then.

Today, though the light is still on, it drove normally to work. No wierd noises, no weakness/power loss, good acceleration, fuel mileage was normal.

I'm thinking the KJ just had a "seizure" and now it's fine? I know I'm going to have to take it in anyway...

Now to find a Jeep Stealership with an actual diesel tech on staff.... Anybody know one near Seattle Metro?

I would disconnect the car battery for 30 minutes or so and see if the "light" goes back to normal...

I think the Auburn dealer also sells Dodge. If so they should know diesels.

Okay, today light was off after work.

Car is running fine.

Didn't add or change fuel, either. What the hell?

Guess I shouldn't stress it?

I am with Darby about the ESP malfunction, the ESP light was your first clue. When it malfunctions it can do everything you just described. I have seen cars with ESP malfunction do same thing, take it to a dealer and have it checked as it also will effect your braking ability.

Well, it's due for its first service soon.

I'll definately be having them check this out, as well as perform any TSBs that are needed...

One more question, though... Could a couple of hooligans rocking the vehicle while it is shut off cause this malfunction when it is later turned back on???

There was some idiots screwing around in the parking lot earlier that night, I'm just wondering if maybe they could have tripped the sensor by messing with the vehicle???

I would say no, but anything is possiable I guess. Ask a tech at the dealer maybe they could give a definitive answer.

in all honesty, there are soem things I would drive around knowing there may be a problem, this isn't one of them. It could seriously cause an accident....

mind you that would be on heck of a lawsuit however
