All,

Looking for advice.

I am a LONG time Lost member and love my CRD. I have taken great care with all the mods (see signature line) TB, ARB Studs, SEGR early on, Weeks 101, Man oil/separator, Oil bypass filter, change oil every 4K with Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel oil, Green Diesel tune, etc, etc. My CRD has 102k on it and it is running great.

I was rear-ended but it really does not look like much damage. However, the USAA insurance adjuster is saying the rear left frame member needs to be replaced, back door, etc. The door opens/closes, etc. I just don't see a totaling of the car.

USAA is saying $6600 to repair and they are saying they will give me $8600 to total. They cannot guarantee that $6600 will repair everything but I think it may.

Anyway, what do you all advise? If I take the funds for a totaling of the car, can any of you buy it for the engine or repair yourself?

I will try to upload a pic soon. But wanted to get this our for input and opportunity to the LOST CRD Community.

Thoughts?

Tim

I think you can take the 8600$ and can buy back the wreck truck from your insurance for parts !!

I would have an actual body shop look at it. If its deemed driveable, id let them total it, buy it back and take my cash and either fix the aesthetics or drive as is

1. Get second a opinion from 2 qualified repair shops.

It may be an easy stretching of the damaged rail.

Total it, buy it back and fix it. Get a salvage title if your state allows it, and drive on. If your state does not allow salvage titles, sell it on here, with the TLC you have given it and the great shape mechanically it is in, there are probable several on here that would love to have it!!!

A GOOD frame man using a good frame machine can straighten most anything; seen it done!!!!

Ditto everyone else here. Ive been through the same situation and I'm just about done rebuilding mine. It has taken me almost a year and I bought another CRD along the way as my daily driver in the mean time. You might be surprised how low the buyback value is on these. Just haggle with them and get it as low as you can and I'll bet you can rebuild it for a fraction of what they suggested. I know I did! If you don't mind driving a salvaged car then it will give you years of good service until it breaks in half (like all of my vehicles eventually do).

If you're not really into that much wrenching, it might still be worth buying back just to roll it here and make a few bucks to put toward a new one!

Dealing with much the same situation now, except my back door won't open just yet.

I've gotten multiple body shop estimates running from a high of over $7000 (they were at $3500 before even adding the quarter panel in, so DO NOT believe the insurance company prices!) and a low of $2000, minus the parts. I have sourced the parts myself and have about $600 in and I think I have everything, just making final adjustments and going to run another round of body shop estimates before choosing one.

The prices for the parts:
Tail light: $130, I paid $20.
Rear door: $1500, I paid $65 (ok, it needs to be painted but still)
Bumper: $500, I paid $45.
Rear window: $1100, I paid $45
Quarter panel glass: $350
Quarter panel: $2500, I paid $200 with the glass.

Don't let them take it whatever you do, it is worth more b/c it is a CRD, even if you buy it back and part it out.

Here's what $7000 of damage looks like on mine, and will most likely be fixed for about $2500 total:

Guys,

Thanks much. The vehicle looks good but USAA says the left rear frame section is bent.

I think I will haggle to buy back and try to get the frame fixed. I live in Northern Virginia if anyone knows of a good frame shop here.

Worse case is I will part out here so I can give back to the board.

Do a buy back - you might not even get a salvage title if you keep the vehicle.

Even if you do get a salvage title someone here can repair and keep on the road - or fix a CRD with engine issues with it.

Yeah, I've had a couple situations with other vehicles where the insurance just cut a check since I was the one keeping it, and didn't even ask for the title. Therefore it never gets branded. Hope that is your situation too.

My dad hit a deer in his '05 with 95,000 miles on it. Insurance totaled it so he bought it back for less than $500. Title stayed in his name so no salvage title.
No frame damage to deal with though. just front end pieces and parts.
If a 4 wheel alignment says it's ok you can probably deal with the rest.
Good luck!

Take the repair quote and have it fixed.

You cannot get anything equivalent for anywhere near the money.

BullRun,

You and I watched Jim do a TB and ARP in Vienna ,VA Since you are local, do you know of anyone who can reliably check and repair the frame?

Here are some pics. Hard to believe it is a total in the eyes of the Insurance.

THAT is what they consider a total?

I can tell you how to fix the back end in about 10 minutes of work and maybe $50 in boneyard parts:

The two flares pull off after you punch out the rivets that attach them to the wheel well. A pointed poker works great for that. Replacement body clips and re-usable plastic rivets are available on Amazon for about $5 each pack of 25.

The bumper cover (there really isn't a bumper) is then held on with 2 10mm bolts on either fender, and 3 philips screws just under the weatherstripping below the door. It will fall right off after that. Easy.

Your hitch probably will need to be replaced, but the mounting points should be just fine.

Where exactly do they think anything was "bent" now? Doesn't look like ANYTHING was hit in those pictures, but the hitch did the most damage to the other car if that red one was the one who hit you?

The damage to my white one was way worse... The door was pushed sideways toward the passenger wall - BUT I have now been able to pull it back and the door functions again, I pulled the interior back and there is *nothing damaged* inside. It is all cosmetic on the skin and just the hinge pushed over about 3/8 of an inch.
