Hi, I have a leak on one of the hoses and removing them to take to hydraulic shop to see if he can replace the union/pipe. My question is is there a reason for them to be so long? From the pump they run to the resonator than on up to the left hand side to a U shaped fitting than back to the rack. Can they be shortened or do they act as a cooler.

While they don't refer to it as a cooler in the service manual, I'm pretty sure that's the function of the U-shaped section.

Look up to see if the u shaped "cooler" under the driver headlight is on the pressure line. If it's not, I'd just add a custom small cooler and shorten it. I did replace mine about a year ago with new oem, but I don't remember if that's the pressure line or not... I would've been a bit more creative probably if I would not have to add the arb bumper. But please let us know if that is pressure line or not. Regardless, I am sure you can fab your own using pfte connectors and high pressure braided hoses, which would probably outlast the vehicle 3 times...

The gas models appear to have a finned cooler on the return line (52129063AA for LHD, 52088927AE for RHD), mounted behind the grill near the left headlight. Diesels don't have a cooler on the return line, but they do have that U section mounted behind the left headlight on the pressure line.

If you really want, you may be able to have the hydraulic shop remove the U section to shorten/simplify the pressure line and then add a cooler on the return line like the gas models have.

Hi, Yes the U section is on the high pressure side and the guy at the shop told me to stick with it or install a cooler on the return as others here have mentioned, My older 2004 CRD was plumbed completely different to this one, a cooler on the return and a much shorter run from pump to rack. I decided to replacing the hoses and keeping the original setup. Thanks for the responses.

Thanks for confirming the pressure line. I wonder, does the gasser have a different power steering pump?

Power steering pump part numbers (per the 2005 parts catalog):
52088711AE - 2.4L gas
52088710AE - 3.7L gas
52088712AC - 2.8L diesel

It sounds like the fluid reservoir for the gas models is on the left side of the engine compartment and it's definitely on the right side for the diesels, so I'm not sure the gasser's return line would be long enough to reach the reservoir on a diesel if that's what you're wondering. Of course it's the low pressure line so I can't imagine it would be a big deal to extend it with a hose barb coupling.

Because of the SUPPRESSOR the hydraulic shop can not press new hoses on to it, so going with a short hose principal. See how things go and maybe a cooler on the return line later. Do your LHD CRD's have that suppressor bottle shape object on the high pressure line. My old CRD did not have one.

Yes, I have it, and I believe it's called the dampener, at least as I know, on this side of the pond... gde stated that it's purpose is to eliminate power steering pulsations. This is another reason I went with oem hoses, I didn't feel like doing more extra work, especially because I had other projects to do on my crd at the time.

Btw, I'm almost sure you can adapt some pfte connector on the dampener/suppressor if you have the time...

If its the cooler hose you can cut the hose crimp lenghtwise with a die grinder or a dremel and then peal it off , then you will see there's 2 bulges on the end of the pipe one at the end and one something like 3/4" more in ( be careful not to cut to deep into the bulge )

you can then slide the hose over ( better to get new hose ) and use a tridon clamp or even better a fuel clamp to secure it.

the u shape thing is a cooler , you can use whatever other cooler you can find an other vehicule with the same pipe size. it's a good thing if you off road a bit !!

Won't the oil cooler blow up since it is mounted on the pressure side? I'm not sure how many psi the steering pump outputs, but it's in the hundreds - thousands psi. Do you have a special cooler you used on the pressure line?

Has your CRD's have the suppressor fitted? and if any one knows what its for.

We do have the suppressor. Thermorex said according to GDE it's to eliminate power steering pulsations.

If the u-shape cooler doesn't blow up, any other cooler as long as the pipes are not aluminium shoudn't blow up. they are basicalt a u-shape cooler with fins

There are coolers built similar to radiators, stack plates, those can't hold more than 50ish psi pressure safely. A pipe is way stronger in holding pressure compared to stacked plates coolers (which are the most efficient). Also, most coolers that are bent pipe with fins are pretty weak, you can bent the pipe with your bare hands, the u-shaped stock pipe is pretty strong. I one would not use just any aftermarket cooler on a pressure line, be it aluminum or not.

the trick to cut the crimp only apply for the return line.

update-used the old fittings from the pump and rack with a fairly long hose between them to hopefully act as cooler. With no suppressor you do feel pulsations through the steering on tight corners but no real differences on normal driving. When time allows I will probably add the suppressor back to the line and a cooler to the return. Was quoted over £400 for a replacement part that's about $500 :banghead: My mod £25.

That's the normal placement on most vehicles. But you should know crd is not a normal vehicle. Lol.
