Transfer case lever

So our Liberty CRD has the floppy transfer case lever condition. I was just out there looking at it and see the cable is still connected at the transfer case. Thinking broken cable. How big of a job to change? Can the other end of the cable become disconnected?

I think I answered one question. The lever end of the cable looks to have a cast housing that the lever attaches. I'm guessing something with the internal workings failed.

The 4-wheel drive shift cable is held to the lever at the transfer case by a plastic "cap" that is easy to break. In addition the cable outer lining is retained in another plastic (IIRC) clip. If the "cap" breaks the cable can become detached from the lever. If the lining retaining clip breaks there is nothing to keep the lining in place while the cable pulls on the lever. In both cases the lever will just flop.
