I have spoken...They will rub. Not very much, but they RUB !!!!!

Se7 said: "These are the people who own those size tires reporting no rub, so I would tend to believe them first"

I Own 245/70's ....They will rub

This too: "It doesn't matter which measurement you use, the width of the tire is still relative to that given width. What the actual tread width or section width of the tire is is not important"

I'll take the best tread width (foot print) without the section overinflation, thanks. Usable tire -vs- fluff.

And he said this: "Nobody is really going to sit down and measure out all the possibilities when they can just take the word of the dozens of people who have used trial and error"

THATS A MISTAKE  :lol

Oh yeah, the 245/70's....THEY RUB

I have to disagree. Mine do not rub at all. I have tried time and time again, to get them to rub, and have not succeeded.

I've been running 255's since Feb. 06 and have some rubbing but no tire wear. Really not much of the plastic well is being affected. So, stock...sure 245's might be better if you are worried about a little rubbing. But, 255's look so much cooler! Even before a lift.

Then their is either something wrong with your Jeep or with you. And how hard do you have to try? Beyond actual usage?

I guess under the most unheard of circumstances you could make a 215/70 tire rub. Take a jack under the axle and keep lifting and eventually the tire will hit the wheel well.

They rub,

Tarkus, You feeling good ???

Your last statement shows you agree...(They Rub):

"I guess under the most unheard of circumstances you could make a 215/70 tire rub. Take a jack under the axle and keep lifting and eventually the tire will hit the wheel well."

Well, I don't know about the 215/70...But I can tell you about my original 215/75's

Tarkus said USAGE......They rub

Littlehorn, I never said significant or binding rub.

XC-Rob's question:

"How large of a tire can be put on a stock Liberty (without doing any modifications)."

answer: 255/70

BUT, They'll Rub

I got it now. If you take out your front diff, they will rub.

If it's not too much trouble, would you mind posting a few pictures of your wheel wells to show the clearance? I have an '03 Sport with stock suspension, and I want to put on some General Grabber AT2's in 235 or 245 size. None of my local tire stores stocks this tire, so I won't be able to exchange 245's for 235's if the 245's are rubbing. I have to get this right the first time.

The main rubbing is the rear. You gotta work on it, but they rub.

Video guy. Its not about lift clearance. Its about how the inside of the rear tire tucks at an angle. When the 245/70 is stuffed to the absolute max hitting the bumpstop the tire rubs on the inner fender here:

http://www.thefergusons.us/kj/rub.jpg Not enough to cause ANY problems.

On the front, you will get Full lock rub on the plastic, all you have to do is trim a small unneeded portion away...no more rub.

Tarkus, I guess there is a miscomunication on my part...I was trying to say there is no difference with the 4x2 that affects the rubbing thing. Eventhough "no diff in the 4x2" is correct too.

the1jferg: stop scaring people away from getting bigger tires! :-P

"rubbing" should be classified into different categories:
  1. Driving in a straight line, tires rub on something
  2. Tires rub when turning normally
  3. Tires rub only when fully locked turning
  4. Tires rub only when fully articulating
  5. Tires rub only under full articulation at full lock
  6. Tires only rub when you're looking at theoretical maximum spring compression and extension and need to use weights and/or jacks to achieve it in Real Life.

When most of us refer to "Rubbing" we mean 1+2, maybe a 2.5 or so if the rub is limiting the articulation. When the1jferg is referring to rubbing, he means 1-9 or so, where if the tires think about rubbing he panics.

So basically, yes, you will be fine with a 245/70R16 driving on the road and in just about every situation. It's technically possible you MIGHT rub on something offroad in a full lock turn while fully articulating, but at that rate, you might rub like that on the stock tires, too. The 245/70R16 is NOT very much larger than the stock tires.

See7,

Classification is good, (They rub). I guess when the question arises again folks should specify #1 & #2 and how much rub is acceptable. (They Rub)

I think that Classification system should be posted with the tire chart. No Doubt it would clarify things.

I could not have said it better myself as you said in the last few lines....You agree, They Rub

"Panic" is not in my make-up.

#6 is far out man...There is no theoretical Maximum...You are either bump stopped out, bound up, topped-out (stock shocks), or not.

Bottom line is...You ain't gonna rip nothing apart even under the worst scenerio with either a 245/70 or 255/70. (They Rub)

HA HA! You guys crack me up.

This debate has been really helpful to me. The only rubbing I'm concerned with (I doubt I'll drive even 100 miles offroad this year) is #3, "Tires rub only when fully locked turning." If you guys don't think 245/70R16 will rub under nomal pavement driving, I can live with some light rubbing on the trails. I need to replace my Goodyear racing slicks, so I'm going for maximum coolness without the expense of a lift kit. That will eventually come when I can save up for a Rockfather or Frankenlift.

One last issue:

According to the General website, the 245's weigh about 9 lbs. more than the 235's. Will the extra 60 lbs. of rubber (compared to my current tires)on the road impact my gas mileage much?

I appreciate your patience with all my questions! Thank you. Like I said before, if I could bring the tires back after a day or two and exchange them, I wouldn't care. But I won't get a second chance, and for $600, these have to be the right tires.

The gas mileage loss is no more than the loss that occurred when my fat backside gained 60 pounds since I got out of the Marines...

Well here is what I am running on a stock lift 03 KJ
BFG's AT/TA ko 225/75/16
I only have a small rubbing in the back when I have 8 bags of concteate mix on a turn with a small slope. That is alot of weight.
Any other time, I do not get any rubbing at all. I know if I went with the BFG 235, I would do some rubbing with the front wheels at full lock.

You can see the differance between the stock (wife's KJ) Tires (215/75/16)and my BFG's 225/75/16
Any one notice that on the stock 04 blue KJ picture, my wife is a curb hitter!!! UGGGG!!!!!!!
