I recently tried to bleed air out of the system, via fuel filter head pump, but its just pushing nothing......no air no fuel comes out of the bleed screw.

is the manual bleed pump shot?

Sounds like an opportune time to install a lift pump.

Yea, I can't afford that. Like $600 CDN up here . Still saving for back brake pads and rotors.

can I just install an inexpensive filter head mount and a spin on filter and fill it with diesel to the top?

I can get a used spin on filter head mount from the wreckers for about $20-30 CDN, that's why I asked

You could do a inexpensive lift pump using a Facet 40109.
All you will need is the pump, 90 deg brass fittings for the fuel lines, some 3/8" rubber fuel line, a cheap 3/8" pre-filter.
Zip tie it down in the engine bay and wire it directly to the fuel pump relay.

Search for the pump on amazon.
All other parts can be found at your local auto parts store.

if no air or fuel comes out

then either the pump is dead - or the bleed screw is clogged

if you're having air-in fuel issues and need to pump air out - then you need to replace the head at minimum.

(it does come with a new filter)

Update.

Used a mityvac hand vac pump, attached to the bleed screw. Took a bit but it started sucking out fuel and air, enough that the pump valve could be used . Runs fine now, pressurizes and bleed fine. Air was coming from the inlet hose, the clamp was slightly loose. Cut the hose down 1/2" and reclamped it and red loctite'd the clamp screw.

:banghead: no start today, air in fuel again.

got creative on the filterhead bleed.....had a buddy wrap a plastic bag or three around the air chuck off my Powertank CO2 system, and on the lowest PSI setting of the Powertank, push the air chuck into the filler pipe of the tank, while I cracked open the bleed screw wide. Gave it a few spurts of pressure, until a clear air free stream of fuel came out. Closed the bleed screw, put the cap back onto the filler neck and it fired right up.

use low pressure if you do this.

You need to bite the bullet and install an in-tank lift pump!
It will solve all your air in fuel problems period!

yea the cost is just so horrendous up here to get the pump and harness.

Funny thing was, i did not have ANY air in the filter head for over 65,000 KM's of driving, started instantly every day and ran smooth. It wasn't until i was under the hood last week and I accidently undid the fuel hose clamp instead of another clamp (the intended clamp was on my air / oil catch can) . (working in the dark). I was tired and forgot to snug up the fuel hose clamp...and here we are...

I might just go with the Kennedy pump http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/kennedy.htm, for the simple fact the wiring is just easier to do (two wires) and no need to drop the tank. (i'm pretty sure i have no hatch under the trunk coating)

either way it will have to wait. $$$$

Just get a used one from any wrecked Dodge Cummins Diesel. Very common and reasonably cheap. As far as I've found, they are all the same. I assume they have salvage yards in Canada...

Diaphragm on prime pump has a pinhole.....

So I gave up the food budget for the next two weeks and bought a RACOR 245 filter head and a fuel water separate r filter and bowl.

Will see what I can find for wrecked Cummins around here, is there a specific model of pump I'm after ?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I will keep my eyes peeled. I haul for a scrap metal place, they get wrecked vehicles in , just a matter of finding a wrecked truck!

limped the jeep home , had to seal the filter head with epoxy putty (used a half pound ball.....LOL) around the pump plunger to keep the air from getting in. A VERY Helpful trucker let me use his air tank air hose to lightly pressurize the fuel tank while I primed the filter and got out as much air as possible.

just curious, could we use one of these??? http://www.xtremediesel.com/AirDog-A4SP ... ystem.aspx

reason i ask is a guy locally is scrapping a bent in half Dodge Cummins truck , and he has that ^ model of FASS. Only wants $250 CDN for it and has the bill of sale (Jan 2017 ) and it only has 10,000 KM's on it.

Dang good price!

The pressure isn't high enough to hurt anything, but they are WAY overkill for the CRD.

No reason it wouldn't work that I can think of, as long as you use good proper lines and fittings.

It actually could be a really good thing if you run Biodiesel or BDblend in % over 25.

Make sure to put new filters/water traps on. That kind of an accident is likely to have jarred bad things loose in the filters, that you don't want going to your CP3.

Neat thing about the FASS is even if you do pull air from the line fittings at the tank, it will deal with it internally rather than sending it on to the cascade overflow valve.

The thing you must check though, Is if you have enough room to mount it with the brake booster, the ESP/ABS unit, and the intake manifold right there.

It will work, but as Gordon stated, it is a way overkill for the Jeep.
Besides, you can buy the in-tank pump new in Canada for a lot less than the $250 for the Air Dog setup!
If you need help with modifying the harness, give us a shout!

see this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Fuel-Pump-Module ... pg&vxp=mtr
$126 (Approximately C $169.8 ) & free shipping in Canada!

I cannot believe how fast the primer pump on the Racor, bled the air out of the system, im so used to the POS chrysler filter head, taking 400 - 600 pumps to remove all the air. The Racor took less than 7. SEVEN!!!!!!! turned the key, and it fired up WITH AUTHORITY.

no lift pump yet, just the RACOR head and 2 micron filter and fuel / water separator bowl. Jeep runs quieter, smoother.

Drove it HARD in freeway speeds in 30 Deg Celsius heat today, shut it down hot (after turbo cooldown/lubrication) and it fired right back again with authority.

BEST PURCHASE EVER (as well as the ARB rear diff cover arriving on Tuesday)
