OK. So, my gf has a 2002 kj with 80,000 miles and has never engaged the 4wd. (I know, I know, you're preaching to the choir). We will be taking a trip to the Outer Banks in a couple weeks and they have beaches where it is legal to drive. My question is, are there any special precautions that should be taken to make sure that everything is in working order? She had it inspected after she shredded her serpentine last week, but I don't know how closely Joe Mechanic looks at 4wd components. Is 4wd a "use it or lose it" function?

It should be fine,way back when I purchased a '84 F-150 with 120,000 miles and the guy I bought it from never engaged 4WD(I new him so I now it for a fact),soon after it rarly left 4WD and worked great.I would check to make sure it engages and maybe use a little WD-40 on the linkage cable and check the linkage also.Since you are down there better check the fluid as well,better to be safe then sorry.

Try it before you leave to be sure. Get in some gravel or mud and put it in part time. See if the front wheels spin. Then try 4-low which is what you need for sand to keep the tranny from over heating. Air down the tires also if the sand is soft.

Just make sure to be in neutral and at a speed 2-3mph (manufacturer recommended) I personally am usually right around 5mph... when going into 4-Low.
Other than that it just takes some getting used to... enjoy.
