While I've got the intake & exhaust manifolds off, should I clean them out before reassembly?

And if so, using what?

And while we're at it, what do you all recommend for cleaning the mating surfaces prior to gasket installation?

Thanks,

Many people take the intake to diesel machine shops and have them cleaned in their large parts washers. It is a real hassle doing it by hand. If you're stubborn like me, I used a large storage tote with about 2 gallons of diesel in it and just soaked and brushed it clean. It is a long process and destroys all the tools involved. I threw away the tote, brushes and about 5 pairs of long gloves, but it works! Also, be sure to soak the cam shaft bearings in motor oil prior to reassembly so they don't scuff when the motor is started the first time.

The exhaust manifold shouldn't be terribly dirty. You could soak and rinse it as well if you think it is necessary. If you're really anal you could soak it in rust remover, blast or brush it to bare metal and paint it with manifold paint to make it pretty, but I think that would be a waste of time.
