Does anyone happen to have the adapter that converts the filter head take an off the shelf filter like a cat 1R-750 or the equivalent?

I had one for the '06 and it worked great but I guess the shop that used to make them doesn't anymore.

Just a shot in the dark to see if anyone has one sitting on the shelf or knows where I can source one. The silver object in the below pic.

Thanks,

You should keep the OEM type filter since it is also a water separator filter with the WIF sensor in the bottom of the filter.

If you want to have better and much improved filtration, do as some as some on this forum have done and add a 2 micron secondary fuel filter head and filter like the CAT filter between the OEM filter and the CP3 injection pump.
It does require that you have an intank or inline fuel pump to pump the fuel through the two filters.

I can supply you with the mounting bracket to add a secondary fuel filter if you want to buy your own parts, or I can supply you with a complete kit with all necessary parts including the filter, mounting bracket, fittings, filter head, fuel hose, etc...
PM me if interested.

Thanks for the reply and offer.

At this point, The engine bay is cluttered enough... :)

I had done the conversion to our 06 and it ran 80,000 trouble free miles with that.

Its clean and simple.

As a tip from a pro... If you don't have a lift pump then DON'T go 2 micron, it is too restrictive to suck through and it will starve the pump, it pumps extra volume to cool its self and it will self destruct in time with the 2 micron and no lift pump. I have seen many problems with Duramaxes doing this. There is a reason from the factory they used a 15 micron filter... Less restrictive when pulling through.

Dang! Thanks for the warning. I did in fact, have an inline lift pump installed in the 06 before I did the 2 micron conversion.. Looks like I'm dropping the tank next.

Still interested in the adapter.

Thanks!!

Easy lathe part. Any nearby machine shop? Look up the thread specs for the filter and head. The size of the through hole might matter.

The threads are 16 x 1.5MM on the OEM filter head. They are 1 - 14 UNF for a 2 micron fuel filter like the CAT 1R-0750, Donaldson P551313, NAPA 3528, etc...

I still question the validity of totally eliminating the primary filter/water separator along with the WIF sensor and replacing it with a single 2 micron fuel filter without the WIF sensor.

The primary fuel filter with the water separator and WIF sensor performs an additional function than just a stand along 2 micron fuel filter.
And as stated, adding a 2 micron fuel filter does require having a lift pump to pump the fuel through the filters and prevent fuel starvation to the CP3 injection pump.
Remember, fuel not only cools the CP3 injection pump, it also lubricates the internals of the pump, so it is vital to have a positive flow of fuel entering the suction of the CP3 pump at all times.

The ideal setup if you want excellent fuel filtration:

Thing about the through hole is it must be at least part hex, so you can use an allen wrench to tighten it into the filter head. It squeezes the heater puck together. Been running my adapter from Greg and a 1R-0750 for about 10 years now.

Right on men! And thanks, I was running that donaldson on my '06... I will just order a new filter head itself to do this.

But first, I will pull the fuel tank and run the carter....

Cheers,

I agree you shouldn't put on 2 micron filter without a lift pump. Thing is you will find that out immediately if you do because you will immediately have to pump the fuel head to get it even started about half the time or more!

So in the CRD case it is almost self protective in that respect. Apparently the duramax has a little more reserve vacuum etc.
