Cracked block

Took my 06 liberty CRD Into a shop to change timing belt and head gasket leak. Have a cracked block. Suggestions? Replace or repair? Pretty bummed. Jeep must of been like this when I bought it. I'm kinda thinking the po probably knew.

Where is the crack?
Is it leaking oil? Coolant?

If it is a cracked block, you’d have to find a replacement engine.

Leak is on back of engine just below head gasket.
I am located between San Francisco and LA in San Luis Obispo. Any suggestions on where to shop for a replacement engine greatly appreciated. Car is in near perfect condition and we are in it for the long haul.

if engine is healthy internally i would pull out the engine and take it to a machine shop for inspection they might be able to give you a better answer if the block is repairable.

Is the coolant leaking externally or internally?

If internally, (into oil or exhaust) it's likely a split cylinder sleeve, and would be a cheaper repair than an engine replacement.

If externally, is it leaking from a casting freeze plug, or an actual crack in the cast iron? If the latter, Rankom's advice should be the next step.

Did it leak when you bought it? It's really strange that a cast iron block would fail before an aluminum head without some really particular event, such as an engine freeze or running a head bolt down on a hydraulic locked thread hole.

Leak is external. Leaked from the day we bought it but we were unaware of it as the leak was very small and only leaks when engine is warm(expanded). Discovered leak on 250 mile drive home from dealership. Believe it or not, pretty much killed the first day thrill of ownership.
No idea what happened to cause leak. Engine is being removed from car this week and will be able to get up close and personal with leak.
I am hoping it is repairable but I am also searching internet for short blocks or other options. So far I have only found some complete used engines available with uncertain histories for about 3,000 dollars. The uncertain histories make them not my first choice. Any advice on where to locate a short block would really be appreciated. For that matter any advice or thoughts at all are really appreciated. The car is otherwise in excellent condition.

Block is toast. Looking for engine replacement however it looks like I can replace jeep easier and cheaper then engine. Might be off to wrecking yard. 12,000 into it. 4000 miles of use. Bummer.

Please explain how you came to this conclusion. What is the actual problem found?
