I replaced head gasket on a project jeep and put low mileage head on with all new valves. Also replaced rockers. When put valve cover on thought I might have heard rocker fall but wasn't sure. Rotated cams independently and didn't hear anything unusual so I elected to go ahead and reassemble. It started and seemed to run fine before replacing front timing cover and accessories etc. Now on road it runs like it is in limp mode with no boost but there are no codes.

History: Jeep overheated once when wife drove and she tuned heat on and cut ac off and then added coolant. Coolant was low so I felt that was the first indication of slow coolant loss that continued for about a pint every 1000 miles or so if driven continuously. the head gasket quick test was positive , pressurized coolant bottle when cold after running 30 seconds and this was a small amount. Vehicle ran normally prior to recent work.

What is easiest way to see if rocker off without disassembly?

1. Is checking Mass Air Flow good enough though I know without mapping it it cannot pinpoint which cylinder.

2. What is needed and what is easiest way to check compression in this engine ( not just for this problem, I have miller tools)

Any suggestions?

New info son cam e by and turbo hose to intercooler doesn't build up pressure with acceleration in park. This may be the problem but still answer the original questions please.

I think I found the problem, Intake side of intercooler weeks adapter was loose (my son supposedly put that side on) Will see what that does.

If you removed the air cleaner box, make sure that the sensor on the side of the box is SECURELY connected to the harness. If not fully seated, it will go to limp mode. I had it happen once. Looked like it was fully seated, but a little extra push made it click.

Thanks Jay , it was the loose intercooler hose connection. It turns out he had tightened the clamp. He put it back on and with first rev up it popped off again and we heard it. He had tightened the lower clamp on the weeks kit short silicone hose below the bulge on the metal pipe so it would just blow apart. He didn't even realize it the second time. Then third time I checked it and replaced the bottom clamp above the ridge. So now the brown 06 is back on the road with new rockers head gasket new valves all around on low mileage head and new timing belt even though it was just changed about 5,000 miles ago. I won't do any off head work in future without replacing at least all the exhaust valves that have over 100k or so on them and plan to do preventative exhaust valve replacement by 150,000 miles.
