got a used 05 in my flock. wife was driving it over the weekend and the check oil light came on. I had changed the oil about 2 weeks ago so the oil is fresh and topped of to the correct amount, 6.5 quarts. I had her check it and she said it showed on the dip stick. had her drive it on home.
here is what I see and am questioning. when the engine is at idle the light and alarm will come on. if I rev the engine up over about 1200 rpm the light goes out, off the gas and its back on.
im making the assumption that I might have a defective sensor. any clue as to where this would be located? hope it is a replaceable part.
OR is this an indicator to something more sinister????
thoughts?????

Mike

I don't know exactly where the sensor is but checking with a mechanical gauge would be best. Someone will chime in with location I am sure. There may be a way to check oil pressure via OBD using torque pro etc. but this really wouldn't prove anything if the sensor is bad and it measures oil pressure not just level. I guess it could also be a wiring problem/short. If its got a lot of miles and pressure really is low and not due to pump a little heavier weight oil might at least keep the oil light off though it may not help much otherwise.

Oil pressure switch is down where the oil filter threads onto the oil pan.
Probably just a bad switch.

Of course, check for leaks.
Also, on mine oil really likes to stick to the dipstick. Sometimes it looks like its waaay over filled.
So I have to wipe it down really good and try again.

These oil pressure sensor/switches are notorious for going bad! :(
Replace the sensor with a new one. It is located right in front of where the oil filter attaches to the engine.
It is a common oil pressure switch.

99% chance it is the sensor. The sensor is useless to detect an actual problem - the oil pressure pump is a gear pump connected directly to the crankshaft. It CANNOT go bad, and with that pressure location, if there is just enough oil to go between the pump and the filter, the light will never come on. Even as the rest of the engine is deteriorating.

I had this happen to me, there was a severe oil problem (turbo failure) and it damaged the rod bearings. I replaced the turbo and refilled the oil, but did not know at the time that the rod bearings had been starved while the turbo failed and pumped all the oil into the exhaust. The result was that the #1 piston broke apart and punched out the oil pan - The light didn't come on until AFTER I had turned the key off!

Never trust the idiot light to prevent a problem - it is only going to inform you of the Titanic sinking after the water is around your neck.

There is a little small "RED" lock slide that you have to push to one side to unlock the connector so you can depress the release button.
After unlocking you must depress the "Release" button that is on one side of the connector and pull the connector off the oil pressure switch.

When reinstalling, push connector onto new oil pressure switch until you hear or fell the connector release button click into position, then push the "Red" lock slide lever back to the locked position. See pictures
Hope this helps!
Good luck!

The pump can go bad It can get worn out to a point that the pressure at idle is not enough.

It can also be cause by the wrong oil grade, too thin !
