So, reading threads and the FSM about replacing the rear diff pinion seal, I'm confused. People mention a crush sleeve that needs replacing, but I don't see it in the FSM write-up, and I can't find it in the exploded parts list for the rear diff. Can someone point me to what the part number is and where this comes into play in the FSM pinion seal replacement procedure? I have an un-modded 05 KJ CRD Sport. I believe it's an 8.25 axle.

See Section 3 - page 79 in the 2005 FSM:> http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/2005JeepKJServiceManual.pdf
It covers in detail how to install seal and crush sleeve and tighten until proper turning resistance (bearing preload) is achieved.
Friendly Note: Requires some special tools and some experience to get it right. :juggle:

Thanks so much! I do have that manual, but I was a little confused regarding how to just replace the pinion seal itself rather than the whole caboodle. And TBH my partner is doing the work, I just research, find the parts and instructions/point him in the right direction. He's acquired the tools to do it right, including that torque wrench to measure the ft/lbs for the pinion nut, etc. And he's ordered two crush sleeves JUST in case.

The part number confirms what I thought, but it's weird, because when I found it online at O'Reilly's it said that is was NOT the right part for my specific jeep?

So I just wanted to double check with y'all.

Cheers!

Correct O'Reilly part no. Part #: 721A034 Line: PTQ
Differential Crush Sleeve Rear; Chrysler 8.25 Inch Ring Gear

It takes a lot of torque to crush the sleeve to the correct amount to get the right amount of bearing preload (drag) as measured by an inch pound torque wrench. The real challenge is holding the pinion yoke stationary while tightening that pinion nut a little at a time. Best of luck! :banghead:

Awesome, that's the one he ordered. Yeah, he's worried about whether he can get the torque right while under the vehicle on jack stands. Thanks for the tips!
