My engine will not start. I have an active P0102 code...nothing other codes. Just came off a long round trip between Nor-Cal and central Nebraska.
I seem to be getting food amounts of fuel to the injectors. While driving. occasionally, the engine just seemed to start losing power and sometimes stall-out while driving. I'd pull off the road, when I sensed it was going to do this. I would let it set for about 10-minutes.....restart and be good to go, with full power. This happened quite a few times over the past year. Now, it won't turn over at all.
Any hints or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
This sounds like it may potentially be more than one thing, but dealing with the one we know about first:
P0102 is the code thrown when the the ECM loses signal from the MAF sensor in the airbox. MAF failure typically results in the KJ going into limp mode, which
might explain the loss of power. Wiring to them is known to get flaky over time, so start with checking that, particularly around the connector that plugs into it; the tab that clips them in place to the sensor fractures and/or breaks, and then you're left with having to get creative with zip-ties in order to keep everything plugged in and working properly. Ask me how I know
As for the stalling out, waiting, and then restarting with everything normal again: to my mind, that sounds suspiciously like it could be a crankshaft position sensor on its way out - at least, the symptoms match up with how they can behave when reaching the end of their life. It can't hurt to replace it since they are known to eventually just let go, but if I were in your shoes I'd track down the MAF issue first.
