First, thank you to all who have helped in the past, here's another one.

Wife drove to town, came out and key in, won't crank. Everything lights up. Battery is fine, I had it on the charger recently, and even with a jump - nothing. Steering wheel moves, isn't locked.

Also, recently, I've had problems with the fuel gauge, won't measure accurately, shows empty when half full.

I've read previous threads on this issue, but not sure what the problem could be.

Most likely it is the ignition switch actuator pin. The cheap pot metal breaks off and won't allow the key to turn far enough to engage the ignition switch. I think the new one has a little stronger design. Here is a video on how to replace: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpjnAS_-IRc

You can always just jump the starter relay in the underhood fuse box... That will help establish where the problem is. If you can get it to Run but not to Start this will at least get it running.

I had this happen to one of my CRD s it happened to be an 05 also. Of course it could be several other things . This is a good bet and a fairly easy trouble shooting exercise.

What he said! It is a good test.
Have key in the "Run" position (Switched on)
Jump pin in fuse box 30 to 87
or
Jump 12v from battery + to pin 87,
either option, the starter should spin and engage and start the engine.
If it does not, starter is bad.
If it starts, actuator rod for start switch is bad or something else the ECM is looking at is not happy.
Brake switch or Park/neutral position switch, will also prevent starter relay from engaging.
Try starting with the gear shift in Neutral.
Make sure all fuses are good in the fuse panel (Power Distribution Center) under the hood.
If battery voltage is too low, it will also prevent starter relay from engaging.

If you have a helper you can check terminals 85 and 86 at the starter relay with a multimeter. Pull the relay, connect the multimeter, have the helper turn the key to start, see if you get 12v. If yes, everything between key and the relay works; if no, your break is that direction. I'd need a wiring diagram to be sure, but probably the 12v side of the relay runs through the transmission range sensor and the ground is probably through the antitheft system. That's what I've usually seen. Either way, the thing that is missing (12v or ground or nothing) will give you a clue about where to look.

Yes the test with a multimeter across terminals 85 & 86 is a good test to test all normal start parameters are being satisfied.
But the simple jump from 12v or #30 to #87 tests the starter motor and if the engine will start and run provided the ignition switch is in the on/run position.
FYI
Terminal 86 is powered by fuse #28 which is powered 12v directly from the ignition switch when placed in the on/run or start positions.
Terminal 85 is grounded by the ECM which is looking at all safety parameters like security, brake petal switch, gear shift position, etc...

Sometimes problem is in start motor itself; sharp knock to the side of it has helped many times. And then complete rehaul with new parts.

My Red CRD would not start this morning. It turned over slowly and then nothing. Battery was fully charged at 12.4 volts. I pulled the starter and installed a new one. Fired right up.

That was the case for me when the engine failed irreparably. But good thing I got it cheap from https://orbimotors.com/ this is not a spam, if anyone needs an engine, I recommend you first try to look there
