Infrequent poster mostly lurker since 2014, 3X current CRD owner all 2006, but for some reason the system doesn't recognise my email address so......new member it is.

Here's the problem boys, (and forgive me if it's been covered elsewhere but I can't find what addresses this specific problem in the forums given what I've already diagnosed so if it's already covered a link would be great).

Daughter's Liberty (380K) blew an idler pulley and partially shredded belt right in the driveway (good bad luck). I changed the pulley, new belt and when she went to start it it wouldn't crank. When she came out earlier to observe me working she picked up a wire tool and absentmindedly placed it on the battery terminals arching them.

So my first thought at the no crank was actually a piece of belt wound up in pulley system somewhere but all clear. Next thought was fuse. And sure enough the ignition fuse was blown. Replaced and still no crank with little red anti theft light originally blinking on initial attempts now just solid. The relay under the hood for the anti theft system clatters a fair bit when ignition left on.

Steps taken:

- Confirmed starter worked by jumping relay. Cranks fine but zero attempt to engage.
- Key ignition itself feels good. Springs back right. Nothing untoward.
- Tried to reset antitheft through the several different combinations of key/door handle/ignition sequence. No change.
- Swapped relays related to antitheft and ignition system. Nothing.
- Tried a different key. Nothing
- Checked all other fuses and put in new fuses for anything related to ignition/antitheft. No change.
- Disconnected battery, degauzed terminals by touching them and let it sit for an hour. Nothing.
- Jeep had an old command start that hadn't worked been used in years which I disconnected.
- Checked with my local Jeep dealer who said to leave ignition on for an hour with a battery charger attached so computer can reset. Nothing.
- Vehicle ran fine up to the moment belt/pulley broke. I'm convinced the problem is related to the antitheft system doing it's thing. Dealer thinks ECM unlikely fried. But of course the free help offered pretty much ended with the 'ignition on and wait advice' and they want me to tow it the 100Km to their shop (I live in country).

It's always been my opinion that many of the boys here know more than most of the Chrysler Service Techs anyways when it comes to the maintenance and quirks of the Liberty CRD and is always my first go to resource. I'm hoping someone has run into this before who can offer advice.

Consider this a Hail Mary pass before I breakdown to tow and give in to the dealer.

If I understand your initial post, you have more than one 2006 CRD. If so, you have a fortunate diagnostic tool I have used myself on occasion. Remove the ECM from the problem CRD and plug it into the harness on one of you others that run. Attempt to start it. If it starts, it will only run for a few seconds until the ant-theft immobilizer shuts it down due to a key mismatch. this would prove the ECM is ok. If it does not start or crank, it is a very good indication that the ECM is indeed faulty.

If you determine your ECM is ok, you are in for some electrical trouble shooting. Follow the procedures lined out in the FCM. You did not specifically mention this, but swap one of the fan relays for the ASD (auto shut down) relay to see if it starts. Disregard if you already tried that.

Thanks for that tip. I'm back home tomorrow and will try that.

In the event the ECM is the culprit, I suppose I'm going to have to replace a combination of ECM/WCM/Key fob?

So I swapped the ECM into a working vehicle and dead. So I reset the ECM to factory default through the following sequence:

Disconnected battery positive terminal and touched to ground for 30 sec;
turned ignition on;
turned on headlights;
turned off headlights;
turned off ignition.

Then I tried to start and lots of crank. But not even an attempt to start. Squirted a little ether in and she sputters. But nothing.

I've swapped out every ADS relay. All fuses good. Before the ECM reset no codes and after there are 27. Still convinced there's something preventing engine from starting related to the anti theft system but light on dash is out.
