Hi all,

My temp gauge is pegged all the way to H when driving on the highway (freeway in freedom terms).
A/C stays on. Fuel doesn’t cut out. Everything works as it should.
I took it out for the first time not long ago and found the hard way I needed a new relay and crank position sensor. Got those sorted and now this.

I read about the TSB for the gauge posted here. My local dealer says there’s no info on my vin that any TSB or recalls are open.

Either they are lying or I have other issues.
Given the history of this Libby I don’t think anything was done to it other than oil changes.
Since I’ve owned it, it’s had a new timing belt, water pump, glow plugs, YETI Tune-egr delete.

Any way I can confirm if all updates and recalls were performed?
Vin - 1J4GL58575W604839
If the update was done then what would cause the gauge to climb to H so easily?

Thanks

SUBJECT :
Engine Temperature Gauge - Indicator Reads A Higher Temperature Than Actual OVERVIEW :
This bulletin involves reprogramming the instrument cluster control (CCN) module. MODELS :
2005 (KJ) Liberty / Cherokee

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 2.8L turbo diesel engine (sales code ENR).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION :
The customer may notice that the engine temperature gauge may indicate that the engine temperature is high. In hot ambient temperatures, and under certain driving conditions of extended uphill driving while towing a trailer, the engine temperature indicator may indicate slightly above the 3/4 normal operating temperature mark on the temperature gauge (but below the engine hot temperature markings). This condition may be caused by an incorrect calibration of the of the engine temperature gauge. New CCN module software corrects the old engine temperature gauge calibration.

DIAGNOSIS :
If the engine and the cooling system are operating correctly, and the above condition is present, then perform the Repair Procedure. SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED : CH6000A Scan Tool (DRBIII®)
NUMBER : 08-043-05

GROUP :
Electrical DATE : August 11, 2005 CH7000A/7001A J1962 Cable with red DRBIII® connector REPAIR

PROCEDURE :
NOTE : Before proceeding verify that the DRBIII® software version is at level 62.2.
1. Connect the DRBIII® to the vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC)
2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
3. Using the DRBIII® scan tool recalibrate the instrument temperature gauge. a. Select "DRBIII® Standalone" b. Select "1998 - 2006 Diagnostics" c. Select "All (Except Below)" d. Select "Body Interior" e. Select "Electro/Mech Cluster (MIC)" f. Select "Miscellaneous" g. Select "Recalibrate Temp Gauge" option.
4. If the recalibration of the instrument cluster was successful, the DRBIII® will display the following message: "Recalibration Successful".
5. If the version level of the original instrument cluster software allows recalibration, but the recalibration of the instrument cluster was NOT successful, then the DRBIII® will display one of the following messages :
6. "Recalibration Failed" or "Write To Memory Address Failed". If one of these messages occurs repeat the above steps.
7. If the instrument cluster has already been recalibrated to the correct software version level, then the DRBIII® will display the following message :
8. "Gauge Already Recalibrated - Press Any Key to Exit".
9. The DRBIII® will display the following message if the original instrument cluster software version level is not the correct version level for recalibration :
10. "MIC Software Version Incorrect - Press Any Key to Exit".
11. Verify that the instrument cluster engine temperature gauge has been recalibrated by selecting the "Recalibrate Temp Gauge" option again. The DRBIII® should display the following message :
12. "Gauge Already Recalibrated - Press Any Key to Exit".
13. Turn the vehicle ignition switch to the "OFF" position
14. Disconnect the DRBIII® from the vehicle DLC.
POLICY :
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.

$350 later the dealer said all updates have been completed on it already.

So, that means it’s over heating I guess.
Dealer wanted $1300+ to do the thermostat-No thanks.

I know the tstats fail open, so maybe it’s bad coolant (no previous history) or the fan clutch is shot. Or the A/C clutch is shot. It is making a fair bit of noise (not squealing but bearing noise) when engaged.

I’m going to replace the t stat, do a coolant flush and the fan clutch.

Can someone provide links for these items?
Looks like IDparts sells a new t stat and heavy duty fan clutch.
Will these suffice?
I know there’s a GM upgrade that ppl usually get at junk yards but around here those are rare.
Can anyone post the GM part numbers?

Thanks

Fan and clutch have been ordered :D
Amazon seems to be the lowest price currently for them.

Would IDParts thermostat be sufficient?

While I’m at it I will do the serp belt and idler pulley as it’s bouncing.

I would also like to install your viscous heater delete kit while I’m at it.
Please DM me pricing and shipping options.

Lastly, what can I do about the noisy A/C condenser? Noise happens whenever it’s engaged. Junk yard find I assume?

Thanks

Best thermostat option is DieselJeepLuvr modified thermostat housing that uses the Hemi thermostat and is serviceable.
See this:

Sent you the Viscous Heater Delete Kit Info. PM & email.

What kind of noise is coming from the AC condenser?

If the tensioner pulley is bouncing, look at your alternator pulley. When the alternator pulley clutch goes bad it will cause the bouncing that your are noticing. Easy fix to replace the pulley with the sealed Litens pulley unit or you could replace the whole alternator. I can't find the part number for the Litens pulley...maybe WW has it

Litens Alternator Pulley PN: - 920720A :google:
Best price I found was on Amazon:> https://www.amazon.com/Litens-920720A-A ... 129&sr=1-1

If you have a local starter/alternator rebuilder in your area, check with them, they may have some in stock at a reasonable price. This same override pulley was used on some Toyota's and a few other vehicles.

Pulley has been ordered as well.
Let’s see if a can get rid of this belt squeak that happens whenever I drive it for more than an hour.

Thanks all

As for A/C noise;
Whenever engaged it’s a bit of a rattle, much worse than any other condenser I’ve come accross. Turn a/c and defrost off and the noise goes away.
Can we still get or rebuild these?

Lastly,
Where can I get a good harmonic dampener? Looks like they are discontinued.
Anyone here have a good conditioned one they are willing to sell?

Thansk

Did the fan and clutch upgrade last week. Was charging my AC and high side hit 400, yikes! also noticed that my temp gauge was 3/4 when idling.

Napa has superseded some part numbers so I used TEM 271312 clutch and NOE 620-602 fan. Got some 10 1.50 bolts at ACE along with flat and lock washers.

Now AC is working better and temp gauge has not gone passed half way. Seems a bit quieter too.

AC noise most likely is your compressor or its clutch rattling? New compressors are still available at most parts stores and online.

Harmonic Balancer, you got two choices, find a good used one from a boneyard or from someone parting out a Jeep Liberty CRD, or send yours to Damper Doctor and let them rebuild it. Having it rebuilt is probably the best option.

The noise when your AC is engaged is from the alternator pulley. The AC puts extra load on the belt and that's why you notice the squeak. There are checks described in this forum to see if your alt pulley is seized.

Flushed the coolant, New Tstat, gm fan and clutch.
Over heating has been fixed. Temp stays rock solid.

Now onto my over boosting problem.
I thought I fixed it but something else is causing it now.

Over boost fixed. For now.

Carbon cleaner in the hot side of the turbo.
Lube on the actuator.
A good jerking that would make my teenage self envious and so far so good.

I also was able to find a new a/c compressor and rad for $50.

Cheers!
