My 05 Liberty CRD came up with a P0698 code and the flashing ETC light the other day. There have been no changes in how it drives.
I’ve looked on other forums but can’t find anyone with the same issue. The code stays, but sometimes the ETC light goes away and then comes back. I’ve cleaned the plugins for the accelerator position sensor (also i think where the throttle sensor is) and i’ve cleaned any wires that other forums have talked about. Still no fix.

Again the car drives fine, there’s no power loss, just the annoying lights.

Do I just need to replace the entire pedal?

Any help?

I would. That's a pretty rare failure but anything electronic can fail.

Car was running and driving fine for the past few days with the light on. I went to reverse today and noticed it was sluggish, when i put it in drive the car shook and the engine shut off. The new accelerator pedal gets here tomorrow. Could that be the reason the car shut off?

Figured I'd update this post for anyone looking for help. Turns out it was just the pedal. I replaced it with a used one and I also used contact cleaner on a bunch of sensors in the engine bay. Been driving since I made this post and I haven't had any similar issues.

Yes, for anyone who finds this later the blinking idiot lights indicate a severe problem that generally means you should stop driving as soon as possible. The traction control/EC light blinking does mean that you need to replace the accelerator pedal assembly. It has multiple sensors in it and if they do not agree, you get The warning light or the flashing and the car will eventually go into a 10 mph ultimate limp mode if they really don’t want to allow failure because this is a drive by wire system.

More information on the ETC WARNING LIGHT on the Instrument Cluster.
(It is not something a driver should ignore)
Quote:
(ETC) Electronic Throttle Control Indicator
• Bulb Test - Each time the ignition switch is turned to the ON position the ETC indicator is illuminated for about fifteen seconds. The entire bulb test is a function of the ECM. (Electronic Control Module)

• ETC Lamp-On Message - Each time the cluster receives a lamp-on message from the ECM, the ETC indicator will be illuminated. The indicator can be flashed on and off, or illuminated solid, as dictated by the ECM message. The indicator remains illuminated solid or continues to flash for about twelve seconds or until the cluster receives a lamp-off message from the ECM, whichever is longer. If the indicator is illuminated solid with the engine running the vehicle will usually remain drivable. If the indicator is flashing with the engine running the vehicle may require towing. A flashing indicator means the ETC system requires immediate service.

• Communication Error - If the cluster receives no lamp-on or lamp-off message from the ECM for twenty consecutive seconds, the MIL is illuminated by the instrument cluster. The indicator remains controlled and illuminated by the cluster until a valid lamp-on or lamp-off message is received from the ECM.

• Actuator Test - Each time the cluster is put through the actuator test, the ETC indicator will be turned on, then off again during the bulb check portion of the test to confirm the functionality of the LED and the cluster control circuitry. The actuator test illumination of the ETC indicator is a function of the ECM. The ECM continually monitors the ETC system circuits and sensors to decide whether the system is in good operating condition. The ECM then sends the proper lamp-on or lamp-off messages to the instrument cluster. If the ECM sends a lamp-on message after the bulb test, it indicates that the ECM has detected an ETC system malfunction and/or that the ETC system is inoperative. The ECM will store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for any malfunction it detects. Each time the ETC indicator fails to illuminate due to an open or short in the cluster ETC indicator circuit, the cluster sends a message notifying the ECM of the condition, then the instrument cluster and the ECM will each store a DTC. For proper diagnosis of the ETC system, the ECM, the PCI data bus, or the electronic message inputs to the instrument cluster that control the ETC indicator, a diagnostic scan tool is required. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information.
