Looking for input from those that have done it. I'm in the middle of the head gasket job, with all associated upgrades, and want to install an EGT probe while the manifold's off. With the front heat shield blocking manifold runners one and two, and the rear heat shield and turbo blocking two and three, it looks like the only practical place to put the probe is in the top of the number four runner. Has anybody put one there? If not there, where did you put the probe at? Also, I have a spare probe for my big truck's Cummins engine and wanted to use it as a mock-up for the Liberty. The probe I have is too long to fit 1/2 way into the exhaust manifold runner. I want to use a GlowShift EGT gauge, and they come with a probe. Does anybody know if GlowShift offers a probe short enough to use in the Liberty's exhaust manifold?

Greatly appreciate all inputs!

Steve

I put my probe in the exhaust manifold collector area, just before where the gasses enter the turbo. I drilled tapped the probe from underneath the manifold.
Although others say the best place for the probe is on the exhaust side of the turbo where the word Garret is.

My advice:
Utilize the blanked off EGR port on the end of the exhaust manifold. Simply tap it with a pipe tap and use a reducer adaptor to screw the EGT probe into the end of the exhaust manifold. This way you don't have to do any invasive drilling and tapping the manifold and chance causing a crack.
This will put the probe pre turbo where it should be for best accuracy and readings.

Thanks WW! I've always appreciated your inputs on matters; in fact I'm using some of them on the current job. I've already sealed off that hole with a cut-down metal fence post cap and the original v-band clamp, but could easily take that back off and tap it though. Do you know what size tap to use to do that?

I suspect a 1/2" NPT tap, but I am guessing. You would need to measure the inside diameter of the hole and see what tap size would work best.
Whatever size you use, don't get to crazy with it, remember, pipe taps are tapered. Tap and screw a bushing into the end of the exhaust manifold and then screw the EGT probe into the bushing. You may have to retap the bushing inner treads to match the EGT probe threads?
I would use some JB Weld on the outer threads of the bushing to manifold to make it permanent.

Overall, I really like that idea. I've got the head and manifold off and am not where the vehicle currently is, so only using my mind's eye to picture this:

If installed before reassembly, your proposal would be doable, with clearance between the probe and the firewall. However, due to the location/angle of the old EGR pipe port, I'm concerned that there might not be enough room to remove the probe if I ever had to replace it.

If you've installed a probe as you've suggested, please confirm that it could be removed with the manifold installed on the head. That would be a great ease to any concern I have at this point.

THANKS again for all your timely replies!

Steve

I have not installed one on my CRD. I plan to tap the EGR exhaust port when I pull the head to replace all the exhaust valves this spring.
Unless your probe is unusually long, it should be doable. There are short EGT probes available if you shop around. See picture!
