Hey BigCanoe! Welcome to LOST! My brother lives just on the other side of Raleigh from you.
There is, indeed, a bioD coOp in that area. I'll try to get some info from my bro if you're interested.
Finding good fuel is a bit of a crap-shoot. What fireman says about truck-stops is true. But those trucks are also tuned to run on a lower Cetane point (40 or so). Our KJs are tuned to run on higher cetane numbers (45 to 48 if I remember correctly). I had a really bad tank of fuel from a VERY busy truck stop. Really low mileage for half tank. Then I added some cetane boost and it got a bit better, but I haven't been back.
I've had great results from Crown fuel here locally (just regular "gas" stations, not truck stops), and from Shell fuel. The best I ever had was a tank of B20 from a station north of me. It was in an above-ground tank (always safest since no water can leak down into it) and it had a big American flag on the side of it, which made my truck run better (just like it runs better when I clean it....placebo fuel???)
Anyway, if you're looking for BioDiesel, I would suggest starting with a good B20 from a station that's going to warranty it's fuel. I'm just not sure I'd risk my new truck to the fuel I'd get from a Bio CoOp (but let me know if you want the info and I'll get it to ya).
If you're just looking for good dino diesel, just started getting fillups from stations radiating outward from your house. My first rule for fillups are, cheapest station wins. Everybody fills up at the cheapest station, so the fuel is turning over fast (don't have to worry about old fuel with water). Fillup there and nail it (WOT) going out of the parking lot. If it smokes like a train, don't go back. I left a station once and dropped a 1/4 mile trail of thick black smoke. I haven't gone back.
Another rule of mine is; No service bays. There are, apparently, no laws prohibiting those places from dumping used motor oil into their diesel tanks. Nasty!
I'll see if my brother (who also has a CRD KJ) knows of any good stations on his side of Raleigh, but I doubt it. The last time I talked to him he was complaining about the outrageous cost of diesel in his area, so I doubt he's going to give anyone a glowing recommendations right about now. But I'll let you know what I find.
Scope out some good moderate wheeling spots in the area. The next time I visit my bro we should all get together and wheel around a bit.
