iPod, RB1 in 2004 Liberty

I'm interested in getting the new integrated iPod accessory for my Liberty, to help entertain me on those long drives down to the desert.

The printed materials at the dealership indicated that the iPod connectivity
part works for 2005 and 2006, but I had to ask the dealer about other years. The parts guy had to ask Jeep, but came back with an answer that it was only available for 2005 and up.

It seems to me that if I had a 2005 radio, I could make this work in my '04.
Does anyone know one way or another on that? Does this iPod part plug
into anything other than the radio, some connector that really might not
exist on the '04?

On the assumption that all I need is a new radio, will an RB1 radio fit into a 2004 Liberty? The parts guy at my local dealer says no, but the Morris guys imply that it does fit, listing it in the list of years:

Never trust the dealership. It's known to work in 2004 models and with the RB1:

What model radio do you have in there right now?

I've got the RDS, I believe. AM/FM w/in-dash 6-disc CD changer. That's
not one of the supported radios listed. So I guess I need to get the RB1,
eh?

Why not go with an after market raido? They offer so much more. I've heard, on the forums JeepKJ I beilive, that the 2-DIN 4" units will fit in the opening, but the fascia around the raido and A/C controls has to be replaced/modified.

I think there's a huge difference between the factory 4" screen and an aftermarket 6.5" screen. Most aftermarket units are satellite ready and can play MP3's and WMA's.

I'm not keen on modifying the faceplate or the A/C controls, and I like being able to use the steering wheel controls, which I'm not sure would work with an aftermarket. Plus, I can get the MP3 capability with the RAH.

The one time I did upgrade to aftermarket, I enjoyed the extra features, but I found I preferred the simplicity of the factory user interface. Bigger
buttons.

I do have choices on the factory radios:
1 - same functionality as current radio + aux ports for iPod and Sirius (RBQ)
2 - AM/FM + 1 CD + Nav system + remote CD changer controls (RB4)
3 - AM/FM + 1 CD + MP3 capability + remote CD changer controls (RAH)

If I get #2 or #3, do I
A - also get the remote CD changer, or
B - work on the assumption that I'm going to rip all the music that I care about onto the iPod,
and just use the single disc for the course CDs?

Decisions, decisions!

I could be mistaken, but I think the iPod box plugs in where the CD changer would have, so you won't be able to have both.

Steering Wheel radio controls can be implemented to work with aftermarket radios. If I am not mistaken scosche makes that adapter...

Well, I've taken the plunge. I ordered both the iPod kit and the RB1 from Wyckoff. I was just going to do the iPod kit, as it looked like it would work
with my RBQ radio (I think that's the real model code -- RDS is just the
text feature), but then I looked at the posting over on JeepKJ's forum
with the pictures of the iPod working on the RB1 screen, and thought how
fun it would be to have the navigation function when I decide to try a
side road "short cut", and want some assurance that I won't get lost. :-)

We'll see if I really need the extra CD changer. I'm hoping I can just rip
the songs I like off of CDs and use the iPod. Then I've got the single
disc changer free for the classes on CD from Great Courses.

If you install a Chrysler Multiplex Splitter you should be able to connect two devices to the CD changer port. Our RAM has both U-Connect and Sirius connected to an RB4's CD changer port via Chrysler's multiplex splitter.
