As diesel now sales for more than gas in most places, you would really have to tow often to warrant the mark-up on light-truck diesels. Figure how long it would take you to recover the $6k+ premium if you just bought it for the mileage. I did put 180,000 miles on a CTD dually, but many of those miles were towing an 8,000# trailer.
Sorry, Guys, but VW's are some of the worst cars on the road. Their service records & longevity show that time & time again. Even if the TDI is ok, what about the rest of the car around it? I know that VW's have a cult following that will be up in arms over this statement, but an objective look shows this to be a valid statement.
I read the truck 6.1 was slightly detuned, with about 390 HP, and running regular fuel. The TQ figure, which is really what matters, was reportedly almost unchanged.
A big engine in a truck? Obvioulsy you have never actually needed a truck. Most trucks sold have been cars with big open trunks. Only recently have 1/2-ton trucks been upgraded to acceptable levels of towing/hauling. Heck, for decades 1/2 ton trucks came with p-series car tires. That has to tell you something. If you can get by with less than a full-size half-ton, you would be way ahead by buying an econo box and renting a truck the few times you needed one. If you are buying a truck for a fashion statement, then it doesn't matter anyway. Go ahead and buy your car with a big open trunk. Much like 95% of the KJ owners will never use them for anything but a station wagon. I am not knocking those people as freedom of choice is a great thing, and few of those probably post here anyway. But if you just wanted a station wagon, there are far better choices than the KJ, don't ya think?
