Holy cow! What a horrible twist to your story! I'm so sorry for you. I can't even believe how much you're already paying for insurance! INSANE! I'd be riding a freaking bicycle everywhere if my insurance were anywhere near that!

Well, at least there's an upside to your situation. Bad news come in pairs right? So, you're clear now, right? Knock on wood.

BTW, isn't $3000 a little high for insurance?

First I am glad you are ok after the accident. That is the important thing.

Now, get that car fixed asap so you can trade it in. Go back to that dealer and tell them what happened. Maybe they will still make a deal. You don't know unless you ask. Dealers have body shops. Little cars are in demand right now and jeeps not so much. so this is the time to buy a kj back.

So, BTT a little. My kj is paid for. I like it . I will not sell it. It will have to be pried from my cold dead hands. I also have a cutlass I drive that gets 28-30 mpg easy but everytime I drive it, I wish I was driving the kj. If push came to shove and I needed to go back to one vehicle, which could happen, then the cutlass will go. The kj stays no matter what.

Just tell them a small bug hit the bumper and it caused all that.

An F250. You're lucky it didn't run you over!

still can not see the logic in trading off one vehicle to save 3 to 4 miles per gallon.
I buy a vehicle cause I like it and want to drive it, not park it and drive some little disco car around to save a few bucks??? If I did not like the Liberty I would of never bought it in the first place.
I drive mine everywhere, bought 9/21/04, now almost 4 years later , just hit 110,000, so about 2292 miles a week average, not bad EH???

Why buy something you don't like?
I agree with Tommudd I bought mine in 04 and I have just under a 100,000 miles and I drive it everywhere. If you think about it if you have a second car do you really save that much money with insurance on 2 vehicles and probably haveing to put gas in both cars, because I'm sure your going to be using the Kj at least once during the week.

That argument may hold up if you had both vehicles insured at the same time. I don't. So to answer your question if we compare the two vehicles I have, the Festiva is paid for, the jeep still has $10K + 5.99% interest/month owing.

Jeep cost me $110/month to insure - $1320/year
I'm a student, but I drive 5965 miles over three months (summer work) at $0.35/mile (gas is $5.25/gallon right now and the jeep gets 15mpg due to mods) = $2087.75 in gas

Festiva cost me $59/month to insure - $708/year
5965 miles over three months at $.10/mile (gas is $5.25/gallon right now and I get an average of 53mpg hwy. This is NOT the highest I've attained in this car either. If I really hypermiled it, the costs would be cheaper yet :D) = $596.50

Work pays $.64/mile for expenses ($3817.60 total). If I drive the Jeep (and don't factor in the wear and tear on the $900 M/T's, or the extra $51/month paid for insurance) I would receive an additional 1729.85 over that three month period. When I drive my Festiva (and don't factor in the $200 total for tires, or the extra $51/month saved on insureance) I receive an additional $3221.10 on top of my regular pay. That's an additional months pay over a three month period. If you think about it that an additional 8 months of car payments at a rate over the minimum payment allowed.

It's not that I don't like the jeep, obviously I do because I bought one, but because I sacrifice a little bit of comfort now, I'll be able to pay off the jeep faster; save more money on interest; have two vehicles to use as future collateral for loans; and have more spending money in the mean time. It may not make sense for some people to have two vehicles, but it does for me. One for highway and work, one for recreation. As always, YMMV

EDIT: corrected the cost per mile calculation.

Wow, just read this thread...what a twist. Sorry to hear bad news, glad no one was hurt, but it sounds like you'll have another KJ in a little while.

I traded in my F150 gas guzzler 5.4 V8 for my KJ...I took a beating on the trade in, but I used that truck up pretty good, and I bought it used for a decent price. Used KJ's are going for about $13k to $17k around here...mostly rental returns in good shape with less than 20k on the odo.

For me, it was just a matter of not making the Saudi King richer. I just can't bend over for that a-hole.

I've thought about another truck, since I miss the ability to haul stuff, but I'm back to trailering again for now. If I can find a reasonable 4 banger Toyota 4by to replace the KJ, I might. But the little tin can is growing on me...

Like tommud, I've never bought a car for future trade-in or resale...I usually buy used to keep insurance low, and plan on driving the wheels off the thing. The gas prices forced me to adjust my plan a little.

Good news is that the price of oil is the lowest in 5 months....hopefully to decline further.

DOH! I think most of that will just buff on out though...add some duck tape....some black paint....yeah....your screwed. Sorry to hear about it and glad everyone is ok.

Now for the insurance...perhaps you posted and I am just blind atm, is it a % of the cars value? Insurance here in Nevada is not bad it is the registering that will get you. That is a % of what your car is worth. WHen I bought my libby it cost me around $500 to register the thing. Big dif from my $25 fee in Wisconsin, lol. FYI, that was around 10 years ago, it might have gone up since then.

For Sale Cheap one Ford F250 with minor fender nick on rear bumper as somebody just hit me this week in a small econocar ... nick on bumper will buff out though   Just kidding

Sorry to hear about the misfortune and glad you are safe. Maybe Insurance Co will just pay out on the Cobalt if it is a write off and u can get another KJ... if the damage is not that high, you may want to pay for it out of pocket so you don't get crazy premiums for the next 5 yrs... get ur estimates done

Talk to the F250 owner too and settle if it is not too big $$$

I was thinking about a p/u once, but got a utility trailer instead. I have hauled an awful lot of stuff with it. It is also so much bigger than the bed of any p/u, lower to the ground for easier loading, and the bed tilts, so sometimes it comes in real handy that way. The kj hauls it just fine and the cost and maintenance is a whole lot cheaper than buying even a beater p/u.

..not to hijack the thread....but trailering also means gotta stay in the right lanes, max speed limit 55, and gotta pay an additional $2 per axle in bridge toll...in the socialist replublic of Kalifornia :(

not sure how they determine the cost of how much to insure it. all iknow is every year you drive without an accident, you get a 5% discount on the insurance, i was at 10% but im going down to a -40% discount, so they took they added on 50% to the cost of my insurance.

Yea, back in the day they used to give you a 10% discount every year until you hit 40%. Then they came out with road star where you can get a total of 43% discount plus some savings on Roadside assistance etc. Although they still have the roadstar, they decreased the deduction amount to 5% a year so it takes you twice the amount of time to get to 40% discount. Sucks to be young right now. 10 yrs safe driving gets you additional savings. Too bad for you young whipper-snappers!

Actually I'm not really that much older (33), but you sure do get screwed for just starting out driving. Hopefully things work out for you on the repair and the trade.

Dang.

I would've been in heaven if I was only paying $3,000 a year for insurance when I was 19.

Stupid 3 cars and ridiculously spotty driving record (oddly enough all my tickets were in cars with less than 100 hp...'cept for the one I got in my mom's Probe GT...but that's a whole 'nuther story  )
