still can not see the logic in trading off one vehicle to save 3 to 4 miles per gallon.
I buy a vehicle cause I like it and want to drive it, not park it and drive some little disco car around to save a few bucks??? If I did not like the Liberty I would of never bought it in the first place.
I drive mine everywhere, bought 9/21/04, now almost 4 years later , just hit 110,000, so about 2292 miles a week average, not bad EH???
Why buy something you don't like?
I agree with Tommudd I bought mine in 04 and I have just under a 100,000 miles and I drive it everywhere. If you think about it if you have a second car do you really save that much money with insurance on 2 vehicles and probably haveing to put gas in both cars, because I'm sure your going to be using the Kj at least once during the week.
That argument may hold up if you had both vehicles insured at the same time. I don't. So to answer your question if we compare the two vehicles I have, the Festiva is paid for, the jeep still has $10K + 5.99% interest/month owing.
Jeep cost me $110/month to insure - $1320/year
I'm a student, but I drive 5965 miles over three months (summer work) at $0.35/mile (gas is $5.25/gallon right now and the jeep gets 15mpg due to mods) = $2087.75 in gas
Festiva cost me $59/month to insure - $708/year
5965 miles over three months at $.10/mile (gas is $5.25/gallon right now and I get an average of 53mpg hwy. This is NOT the highest I've attained in this car either. If I really hypermiled it, the costs would be cheaper yet

) = $596.50
Work pays $.64/mile for expenses ($3817.60 total). If I drive the Jeep (and don't factor in the wear and tear on the $900 M/T's, or the extra $51/month paid for insurance) I would receive an additional 1729.85 over that three month period. When I drive my Festiva (and don't factor in the $200 total for tires, or the extra $51/month saved on insureance) I receive an additional $3221.10 on top of my regular pay. That's an additional months pay over a three month period. If you think about it that an additional 8 months of car payments at a rate over the minimum payment allowed.
It's not that I don't like the jeep, obviously I do because I bought one, but because I sacrifice a little bit of comfort now, I'll be able to pay off the jeep faster; save more money on interest; have two vehicles to use as future collateral for loans; and have more spending money in the mean time. It may not make sense for some people to have two vehicles, but it does for me. One for highway and work, one for recreation. As always, YMMV
EDIT: corrected the cost per mile calculation.
