The real purpose of guards is to protect your lights from gravel that gets flung up by your tires, other peoples tires and or the wind. They were never designed on any vehicle to save the taillights from backing into the side of a mountain or another vehicle. Unfortunately, all of the tail lamp guards I have seen for the KJ are useless-- metal or plastic-- as they are grated so huge they would not stop anything from hitting the tail light.
If you get a chance to look at an old rover or military vehicle with front light guards/ or rear guards-- you will see the fronts are small rectangles-- smaller stops the rocks from going into the light. The guards on the KJ are right up there with the fake hollow aluminum Mopar bull bar that installs instead of your front recovery points, the Mopar tube steps that hang way too low, and best of all-- the lovely metal rivets that don't really attach anything found on the Renegade fender flare.
I don't understand how Mopar could make the Renegade light bar to be so functional and good looking and then turn around and make such useless crap. I guess they will not be happy until they turn the Jeeps into civics/scions with tons of chrome plastic upgrades. Perhaps their designers shop at AutoZone and PepBoys, so they feel the need to make useless cheap crap.
Mopar, either make real accessories or none. Whats next: fake chrome plastic shackles that can't be used?
I suppose its like the new Patriot commercials-- where they want you to live in a pretend world where you pretend to pick up wolfs with your fingers and then put them in the boat... and then get in a cheap Dodge car that says "Jeep" and pretend it is a XJ... They you can also pretend that hollow aluminum tube is a bull bar... and pretend the metal fashion statement rivets on yours flares are really functional upgrades and most importantly of all-- pretend you are not going to the mall, but are on a safari in Africa...
