i do not see a need for that intermediate pipe..can you not just cut everything from that piece back and just put in the muffler and the dump..so in other words save the old one or can you not do that?

Yes you could use the one off of the stock exhaust. I just wanted to keep my stock exhaust section intact just in case... I know I will probably never use it, but I wanted to keep it anyway. Then I just clamped the intermediate pipe onto the muffler so i could re-use it on other muffler options in the future too.

Muffler, muffler? If you have a turbo you dont need a muffler! I have three turbo charged vehicles and none of them have turbos. :D

Nope. Ive got a chasis dyno to prove it with my TDI. You dont need the back pressure a muffler (besides many mufflers are straight through) offers with a turbo diesel. At least that has been my experience.

Also, for an easy install get the the intermediate pipe that tkj2002 and I used and shown in the photos. It is a 6" long x 2.5 in diameter pipe with the stock KJ exhaust flange already welded on and 2 studs pressed in (M10x1.5 threads in case you need to get new nuts like I did). Just for everyone else's reference, it is Dynomax PN 51002 or Walker PN 52422.

Do you need a gasket in there, or do they just butt up?

Ohhhh, i didnt realize we were talking about the cherry bomb brand, i HAD* one of those on my old truck (*for a short time, also a V6). it sounded like garbage, like a weed eater.

The thrush i had on it sounded good. The Purple Hornies sound good too.

So just the intermediate pipe and the muffler is all you need? no additional hardware?

Could i see some pictures of how you have installed your mufflers...i think i will be getting the flowmaster super 44 really soon and was just curious as to how you installed them.

Didn't you see how mine was done? I forgot if you did or not, I'm telling you if you do the dual dumps you better either extend the tips or live with the cab noise because dumping them before the back axle is loud inside but DEEP outside..

What you need:

I Muffler
1 intermediate Pipe
1 turndown exhaust tip
2 2.5" exhaust clamps

First, use a hack saw and cut a slit about an inch or so long on input and output tubes of the muffler. You will have 2 slits on either side of each tube. The arrow is pointing to the slit in the pic below. This gives you a small amount that the clamps can pull together without crushing the tubes. Then down the road, if you want to switch mufflers, you can re-use the intermediate pipe and the turndown.

Image

Next insert the intermediate pipe into the muffler input. Tighten it down with a clamp. Do the same thing on the output end of the muffler with the turndown.

Then just bolt the whole thing up to the stock flange. No need for a gasket. No need for a rear hanger either. It is plenty sturdy without a rear hanger.
